Hey everyone,

I have played Simcity 4 for a long time and today I got it on steam just so I don't need to use the disk. But when I started playing it this started happening.

Untitled-1.png

I have no idea why, I removed all the mods/plugins and I was still doing it. It seems to do it when buildings and are being built and when I place animals. I'm playing it in 1920x1080 but I'm sure I have before and iv not had any problems like this in that past.

Any kind of kind of help would be much appreciated,

Jack.

A couple things you can try:

-Make sure your graphic card settings are all set to "Application Selected"

-Try running the game in the opposite rendering mode of what it is running on now. (hardware/software)

Yep that's done it, Just changed rendering mode to software. Thanks Jack. By the way what does changing that actually do?

The option gives the game to choose if it has to be rendered all the graphics from your videocard (hardware mode) or from its software (software mode). this option comes mostly in handy when your videocard is behaving badly (especially usefull when u have an old "outdated" videocard.

If you are getting these "glitches", it's usually a small sign that your videocard is getting old and might be needed to be replaced. You know for sure when u get this with other games as well..

Humm my videocrads not that old, but it's not the best one in the world. So what's better rendering it with hardware of software?

Generally speaking, hardware rendering will be faster than software rendering. However, this is a legacy game that was written before there were neat options like anti-aliasing available as hardware options. All such options need to be set to either off or to "application selected" or words to that effect, so that when the program loads they will all be turned off.

If you are getting weird effects with hardware on, and all the settings are right, then run in software.

It always confused me how software via cpu is slower since you would have thought a CPU would be better.

Actually, the CPU and the GPU multiprocess, something like a disk drive does a list of commands. The game makes a list of things in a standard format, and the GPUs driver and the GPU decode them on their own after a kick from the CPU. This is interleaved on the bus and the only interrupt (fault) occurs when the GPU has displayed the frame. At this point, all that happens is a switch to the next list and restart the GPU. If your GPU is vector driven, it is even faster.

When software rendering is on, the CPU has to set up each and every pixel for the frame, switch frames, then command the frame to be displayed. This is why the game wants several back buffers. Most programs can handle this with only dual buffers.
