The simple rule you have to remember is that all traffic fines are BS. It isn't a penalty for doing something wrong, it's a hidden road use tax. With that in mind, don't expect it to always make sense from a perspective of right versus wrong or safe versus unsafe; it isn't supposed to. The county needs revenue.

That's not acceptable, we pay road tax, we don't expect to be charged again.

This is ridiculous. At least they dropped charges.

Imho they should never have sent the papers in the first place.

Agreed. I wonder what all this fuss cost the state?

To be fair, it was accidental.

This is exactly why there should be a non-judicial appeals process for fines generated by machines and why the system should save a few moments of video of the "infraction".

My friend sold a car to someone, decided to do the paperwork another day and let them drive off. Then he started getting toll road bills. Around Austin they use electronic tolling and plate scanners charge the car's registered owner via snail mail if they don't have a tag.

Right. Because demand-based parking fees designed to maintain optimal turnover of spaces and reduce traffic congestion by reducing block circling are some kind of socialist plot. The reason for an automated system is it saves money over paying the salary of a meter attendant. Though maybe this demonstrates why they should keep at least one employed to watch camera footage.

I guess it depends on if something benefits the greater good or not if it should be subsidized. At the end of the day, nothing is free and everything you use costs someone money either directly or as an opportunity cost

This is just my 2 cents.
