Capacity Question

I have NAM installed. The settings are Medium & Medium. When I open the "traffic simulator configuration tool", it says the limits are 4000 for avenues and 15000 for highways. In the game, if I pull up the 'traffic" map....it shows red (aka problem) congestion levels on avenues with 700 cars, and highways at 2500 cars (but only near the on ramps). What gives?

it might be the roads are congested leading to the ramp? or maybe the intersection

Network capacities are reduced at intersections and at the two squares leading to them to account for stoplights, stop signs, and turns. Showing yellow and red around intersections isn't actually a problem, despite what the advisors say.

Although highways don't have intersections, the game isn't fully 3D, so overpasses and underpasses look like intersections to it. This is a game bug.

Since you have the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool, you can modify the strength of the intersection effect by changing the Intersection Effect Multiplier. Lowering it decreases its effect; lowering it to 0.2 (its lowest value) effectively turns it off.

As for me, I turn the advisor popups off instead. :D

And use the traffic volume display instead of the congestion display. Just click the radio box under the default one. If you have the NAM, this display is much improved.

I just did that for the highways....in one section, the cars on it are 2500....yet it shows up yellow....or 130% of capacity. According to the traffic simulator, it should be 15000. Is this a bug?

You'll notice that in the traffic volume display, there are color codes on the right for different volumes. These can only be shown for a single network at a time. In the case of road traffic, it's shown for the road network. This works fine for roads, one-way roads, and avenues (including, for the most part, the NWM), but streets will show less percentage used than is actual, while highways will show a lot more.

That's why the phrase "Percentages refer to road capacity" appears at the bottom of the legend. The numbers are correct for all networks; it's just the percentages and colors that are off for streets and highways. This is unavoidable. This problem does not arise in the congestion view, which works completely differently.

Interesting. Is the display correct if you chose a specific type of network, which can be done by the radio buttons on the left?

Notice that the different radio buttons actually refer to travel types, not networks. Most travel types (such as passenger trains) travel on only one network, and so then the display is always correct. Although you may have multiple travel types that travel on one network, such as passenger trains and freight trains, this is not a problem, as this view displays only one of them at a time. It's only when you have travel types that travel on any of the various road networks (such as shown by the combined Road Traffic button, or the buttons for cars, buses, freight trucks, and pedestrians) that this problem arises. In all of these views, the legend displays on which network the percentages are based.
