This is starting to look like the testament of St. John the Divine. Who is going to want to pay for all this? Who is going to really want to give up their cherished working habits and plunge into a new learning curve? Can we afford all this economically? How much new hardware will you need to use all of this excremental pile?

Leave us alone, we are barely used to the interfaces we have now. I don't want any "new computing experience", I've already had some.

I will never succumb to the tablet mania. Just because something is relatively new and all your peers have one is no reason for such conspicuous waste. I am sure the tablet craze will be superseded by the next techno-communications fad probably within five years as things have been going. Moore's Law is in full operation.

Recently, I have found myself having heretical thoughts about getting a laptop or notebook. Fortunately, sanity has prevailed. I have had too many dogs to submit to an electronic leash.

And just when you think MS couldn't get stupider, they do. IE10 will not allow plugins. This means that IE10 will not be compatible with Flash. Not that I care since I'm not using IE anyway...

It has implications of pulling in financial horns in a tight market. Wonder what the license fee was for MS to use Flash?

Microsoft said they are not supporting Flash in the Metro IE10 because they want to encourage developers to switch to HTML5. The regular desktop version will support Plug-Ins however, and Microsoft says they have no plans to change that.

So in other words, one of the 2 IE10s will support Plug-Ins and the other won't.

Microsoft has detailed how you can log in to Windows 8 with your Windows Live ID. Everything that is going on in your computer will be synced across other Windows 8 devices that you are signed in to with Windows Live. This includes settings, open apps, etc.

While I don't much like the look of Win8, at least Microsoft is trying to push the boundaries of what we can do with our operating systems...

I'd prefer to stick to Win7 myself, though.

Especially if Win9 is on its way...

As a note, has anyone noticed a pattern with Microsoft's releases, in terms of how it generally was received by the public:

Win98 - crap;

Win98 SE - good;

WinME - crap;

WinXP - good; (2000 doesn't count, it was NT-based and never really came out in non-business environments)

Vista - crap;

Win7 - good;

and so far, Win8 seems to be a very mixed bag.

We'll wait and see, methinks.

NT and NTFS are both getting pretty tired and have too many band-aids.

Yeah, but 2000 never really was released into the non-business market. XP, on the other hand... I'm talking from a home perspective... maybe I should've made that a little clearer.

I have a feeling Win8 is an incremental improvement of the Win7 kernel (much like the Win7 kernel was an improvement of Vista's), rather than a totally new kernel... they're not exactly wanting to break the ol' glass house. But once again, we'll find out what runs under the hood soon.

I agree, NT and NTFS need to be put out to pasture, but for now, it seems they're staying for a little while longer.

Yes, we'll see. Win8 will probably show up in dumps as NT6.2. Microsoft hasn't learned that they shouldn't stow thrones, but the storm is coming.

This news article this morning has general implications for the market. The marketing organization is already in place and has a stong on-line following.

Eventually, MS will have to bite the bullet and start using the world-wide de factor standard Linux kernel. This could easily cause them to lay off many of the marching morons of Redmond. The next question is, of course, who would pay them a license fee for any of their outdated garbage.

The tabet is only 200 bucks? Quite low compared to others, yet again, it has lttle storage and no camera, microphone, etc.

Anyway, in response to the large amount of negative criticism Microsoft has gotten regarding the new Start Screen, they have responded saying there are more features yet to come, many of which will benefit desktops. Microsoft also offered several reasons as to why they scrapped the start menu:

- It doesn't allow for much customization

- It provides no useful information

- It is too small to do much with.

In my opinion, these statements are all ridiculous.

Microsoft could easily make it more customizable. The only way to really customize your system now is to use other programs.

What information is it supposed to provide? Disk space remaining? My start menu, not sure about others has a large amount of space in the bottom right where something like this could be added in.

And why does it have to even be bigger? The start menu does what we want it to do, find and open programs.

A Microsoft employee said that there is an increasing interest in a Start Menu replacement.

She also described the start menu as being a "boring, simple, flat list. The start screen makes it easier to open apps, more customizable, powerful, and efficient."

^ When I was running windows, I had no trouble customizing my desktop using the start menu and the taskbar. As many know, I don't like a screen cluttered with icons. However, if you look at any of my screen postings in the desktop topic you will see that I make considerable use of docked panels (bars, whatever you like), and the menu on the left is eminently customizable. You can do this in windows with a few handsprings. Microsoft has always had a mustn't touch attitude towards their pearls that they cast before swine. It is one of the main reasons, apart from the outrageous license fees, that I left and went to Linux.

Someday, the management at Microsoft will tire of supporting all those marching morons at Redmond and other locations and simply get out of the software business and start clipping coupons.

Except the fact that it offers an opportunity to:

1. Cut a bootable ISO
2. Set up a dual boot

In a more acceptable manner than they have done in the past. I don't know windows 7 installation, but is this the same kind of treatment? Looks more like the Linux installs I've been running lately.

The flash drive is irrelevant. The boot medium could just as easily have been a DVD if you burned the ISO. My point is the ease with which you can now do a dual boot, which used to be relatively tricky in the bad old days.
