I discovered strategy games with AoE 2, I litterally fell in love with this game. But I think AoE 3 is superior by the graphics and the backrounds, I love the covered eras, and the idea of the metropolis. I just regret small maps and poor scenarii.

AoE II is one of the best strategy games ever made. AoE III is literally a disgrace to the series, although, ensemble studios closing down after the release of the third kinda disappointed me as i was eager for AoE IV

I thought Ensamble Studios also made Halo Wars before shutting down. 

 

The AoE II HD is nice, especially if you download custom textures for pretty much everything, but I'm also starting to notice some wear and tear. The AI is weak, ranging from mindnumbingly stupid on easy to boringly stupid on higher difficulties (all it does is cheat in the sense of multi tasking). And pretty much all games go the same. I build a city, I build an army, I crush the other guys city and repeat. Also, the HD version is extremely poorly optimized with a little lag when there are to many units on screen in single player and pretty extreme lag in multiplayer.

You can always change the AI's behavior by modifying the AI script or creating a new one. (or downloading one, I'm not sure though if its compatible with aoe HD)
