Light Rail terminal loops

I know one of the biggest things missing in the NAM-GLR is a turning loop at the end of a line, or just some way to turn trains around. So there are two things that I thought of (one easier than the other).

One is to have a reversing switch, but this can only work if someone makes a mod for allowing LRT's to move backwards, so then you could pull thru the switch, and when you back over it, it automatically puts you on the other track. This would be the best solution, especially where people have private ROW's between a set of one-way roads.

The other way, which is a lot easier, is a basic turning loop, 2x2 tiles, that is essentially the same as creating a bi-directional loop using the GLR puzzle pieces. But with the switch it just adds to the confusion and more times than not, I end up going loop-to-loop until I get the switch. Would it be overly difficult to take these puzzle pieces, eliminate 1/2 the trackwork and create a basic, counter-clockwise loop (clockwise for the folks overseas) like those found all over Toronto for our glorious (and original) Street Car system? If textures are needed, or a basic layout patterns, I can supply a few designs (it helps to be a freelanced transit planner).

As an extra, if a loop is design, what would it require to make it into a station stop too with just one track?

Smaller preferably. That would be great for rural areas, but in the urban areas I'd like to see a 2x3 (2 wide, 3 long) or even smaller (2x2, as can kind of currently be made using the puzzle peices).

With a loop that big, you could almost stick in a loop-to-loop switch to permit running around another train (as some loops are constructed with).

I had a thought on this recently, and I have a suggestion that is sort-of similar to the way C-Trains (LRT) reverse in Calgary. It's small, and could be made to work with UDI, I think.

Basically, a 1, 2 or 3 tile long (depending on which the implementor decides looks best) track segment with a track crossover. The UDI path would simply take the train to the end of the tile, reverse it in the same position, then make it take the crossover and go to the proper side of the track.

The downside here is that trains will look like they are flipping back inside themselves; in reality, LRTs drive past these crossovers, switch engines (either use the engine at the other end like C-Trains, or go in reverse like GO Trains), then take the crossover to the proper side.

A really bad ASCII example, since I'm too lazy to open PSP right now:

    ----------------------------------
    (4) < Track 1 <
    ---------------\ ^ \-------------
    \ ^ \
    -----------------\ ^ \-----------
    (1) > Track 2 > > (3)><(2)
    ----------------------------------

    (1) Train enters here, travels with arrows.
    (2) Train path flips over here, making it look like the train reversed, when in reality the train/UDI train is simply continuing to drive forward.
    (3) Train enters crossover and moves to the proper side of the track.
    (4) Train is back where it should be.

    Hi Josh,

Please to see that someone is working on designing loops for the GLR. I agreee me living in Toronto it would also be even better if someone designed the tracks to run over the roads or avenues like we have them in Toronto and not have the tracks parallel to the roads. I have a feeling this will be hard to build.

P.S. It would also be nice to have a TTC streetcar build (especially with the electric single poll on top of the streetcar).

den52: With the limited amount of space allowed for in the SimCity 4 tiles, that wouldn't work very well... unless you mean inside of avenues. Then there is a close approximation that can be done, which I use quite often: Lay your GLR track in between two one-way roads.
