Dear Simtropians,

Trying to Install: SimCity 4 Deluxe with Rush Hour Expansion Pack

Computer Specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit

Genuine Intel® 2140 @ 1.60GHz

2.00 GB of RAM

Video Card: Intel® 82945G Express Chipset Family

Video Card Memory: 256 MB

Hard Drive Capacity: 74.5 GB

Page File: 1318 MB used, 2761 MB available

I cannot for any reason load SC4 on my new Windows 7 PC. When I put in the installation disk, on the first 2 or 3 times I tried it, it only went to 46.55% installed, and then the installer froze. (51% was the highest I could get.) On the 4th time, the install went successfully. When I put in the play disk, the FIRST TIME I tried it on my Win7 PC...

It goes back to my desktop, almost like a CTD, but it says my resolution is wrong. My desktop resolution is at 1400 x 1050 pixels, the recommended resolution to run SC4. The screen blacked out, and I tried to restore it. On the next try, the same thing happened, but an error occured: "Unable to locate game data".

I haven't been able to run SC4 since then. Not pleasant. 8.gif

Can you figure out what the heck is wrong with my machine? I have an idea for a really, really swell city journal and I'd really appreciate if you can see it, but I can't do that If my machine refuses to have ANYTHING to do with the game.

First, I am going to assume you had finger trouble describing your swap file and that you meant to type GB instead of MB.  If not, that's probably part of your problem.  Swap files should be in the 4GB range for any machine for any reason.

I don't know much about Intel native machines, but I assume you have a fast enough CPU at over 1GHz.  I don't know that GPU, but there are a few tips for any GPU.  Turn off anjy advanced options, even anti-aliasing.  Just set them to the equivalent of 'application selected'.

Second, you don't say which install fails.  The SC4 Vanilla or the Rush Hour update?  The proper order for installation is:

  1. SC4 Vanilla (2 disks) no patching
  2. RH (1 disk)
  3. EP1 update to build level 638
  4. BATupdate to build level 640
After that you should be home free.

The installation disk that I have has the Rush Hour update pre-loaded.

Also, the install that I talked about (failed) was the one that installed SC4 Vanilla (the main game).

Also, EP1 update? BAT update? I never saw that on the installation disk AT ALL.

I just checked EVERY SINGLE file on my computer and it seems that I do NOT have anything

    related to SC4!

The ep update along with the bat update aren't on the disc there on the simcity 4 website. Search around you'll find them. (Sorry I don't remember the exact url's)

Both of my copies of SC4 have scratches on them... mostly minor.

I still think it's a problem with my machine...

Tomorrow, I think I'll clean the disk (I have 2 copies of the game), but it still costs 20 bucks to buy a new copy.

Update! I have spent almost half an hour cleaning both of my disks, with three toothpastes, baby shampoo, and acne toner. I'm drying them for overnight to run tomorrow evening. Should work, or else I have to buy a new copy! :-(

good luck.... you can also try buying the game from steam so you dont need the cd ever again... however, be careful as i can play it on my netbook with windows 7 starter (32bit) just fine, but i cannot install it on my desktop that has windows 7 64bit...i have over 9 copies of the game and bought it from steam... i have a problem with scratching disks also... hope you get it to work, but keeping demand alive for it in retail is always good
