Location/Climate/Cities

The The Royal Gansbaai Kingdoms is located on the west coast of Africa and is south of Morocco. It is mostly arid lands being located on the far west side of the Sahara. Coastal areas receive plentiful amounts of rain, but the land gets very dry very quick due to rapid evaporation. A Mediterranean Style climate exists on the Northern coasts, but traveling inland the climate changes to arid desert very fast. Moisture here evaporates before it even hits the ground. Urban areas in the nation are Massive; with large diversions between urban and rural. The largest city is Al Aium. Other major cities are Nouadhibou, Zukuraai, Sidi-Sabi & Bir Moghrein

History: The Royal Gansbaai Kingdoms are a relatively new nation. In early 1990 the city of Nouadhibou in the disputed lands South of Morocco (West Sahara), goes into complete Anarchy, after the president of Morocco, (visiting the area on a "peace" mission) is killed by a roadside bomb. This put the entire disputed area of Western Sahara into turmoil, and is remained disputed, for a longer period of time. Later that year the conflict in Nouadhibou (&West Sahara) is resolved, and a ceasefire is issued. Problems remain in the area, such as famine and political instability.

History

In 1993; After much dispute over the lands in West Sahara, It was decided by the several West African countries disputed over the area, (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and Mali), that citizens in the boundaries would have independence as their own country, The Royal Gansbaai Kingdoms. This new country was officially deemed a country on June 21st, 1994

In 1997, Major Oil Reserves were found in lands disputed by Morocco, The Gansbaai Kingdoms, Mauritania, Algeria, Mali, and Songhai. The lands were originally disputed over Political issues and "Power". This gave even more reasons to want the area. Tensions between the countries grew over the years.

Recently in late 2008, the disputed lands were given to Gansbaai. The revenue from the oil soon made the population of Gansbaai skyrocket, and Almost every major city in the country is a commercial epi-center.

The Future... Gansbaai is looking for new land acquisitions. One is Antarctica, were it wishes to set up a research facility, and also is starting to fund a space program.

Conflict

The country is the most peaceful African country. This is highly due to its new formation, which sprang into existence only in 1995.

Noudhibou.... The "Oasis City". Noudhibou is an arising metropolis on long peninsula. For 200 years it has been a center of trade, a turn-of the century port, and now its becoming a commercial megacenter.

People call Noudhibou the "Oasis City" for a reason. The original peninsula was a bank of sand stretching into the atlantic. Now, with the help of urbanization and desalination, the city is the second top tourist destination in Africa, with its warm ocean waters brought by the current, strong religious beliefs, quaint hotels, and rich culture, people from all over Europe and the Middle East come to the city to enjoy the lifestyle.

    img0028hw.jpg

Noudhibou is in a strange location. On the far-far edge of the Sahara, were the dunes meet the sea. No natural vegitation to be seen away from the small seasonal river, and what else? A small peninsula on which the city sits, protected by the eroding shore. The closest cities? The ancient walled desert city of Atar, and the flourishing megaopolis known as Zukuraai.

    overveiw.jpg

At night the city remains alive, but somewhat dead. Lights everywere, but utterly quiet. People sit in their homes spending time with family, and eating dinner. Mom & Pop stores still are prevelent here. No Wall-Marts in the entire city, mabey even the entire country.

    img0014dt.jpg
    img0015xe.jpg

Noudhibou Central Station... Utterly dead at night. No trains in at the moment. Just a large empty building, with a lone person behind a counter.

    img0012copy.jpg

As the sun rises off the ocean, the skys and the oceans turn bright orange, and people wonder... the people wonder... why? The sun rising in the west... A rare site indeed.

    img0020lj.jpg

8a.m, The city is already bustling. People walk and drive to work everywere. Small shops, hotels, construction sites, you name it. Tourists still eating breakfast, so the Bordwalk, (although its cement), is dead, and the beach desolate aside from a few Spring Breakers, who passed outin the lifegard tower from drinking too much Vodka.

    img0024so.jpg

Central Station is now awake. A train is due in any minute. People wait inside on the benches and the ticket lines, for the 8:10 to Zukuraai.

    img0029lr.jpg
    img0034sk.jpg

Slums... a sad sight to behold in any city. The Inner City slums, (as called by locals), is a large "Shantytown" of the poor. Very few people are actualy homelessin the Royal Gansbaai Kingdoms. Ganssbaai has an extreamly low unemployment rate.

    img0030s.jpg
    img0031mt.jpg
    img0027xp.jpg
    img0035g.jpg

Islam is the National Religion of Gansbaai, and the largest as well. So ofcorse,  many mosque's exist in Gansbaai. All allowed to built wherever they want. Freedom of religion is not only a right, but a law in the country. The people here respect that. There were not even any protests about the New Catholic Churches being built next to that elementary school playground.

Welcome to part 2, and also this MD's first entry as a Best Seller! If your wondering howmany parts this will be... I dont know. I am trying to showcase all of the main city tile of the city, and theres alot. there will definitly be a 3rd part, but i want to try not to make it into 4. So... enjoy

As you can se Ive got some more built.

    87416574.jpg

On the western side of central Nouadhibou, there is a small section known as "Little Europe". It is named for the large amount of European immigrants, who have moved to the shores of Nouadhibou in the past 5-10 years. A change in architecture is previlent along the main road through the area, and also around "Triangle Park". The area lies just south of the Lahqa Mosque, which is some of the europeans actual religion.

    img0014t.jpg

    40949322.jpg

The Pofedder Pilliar Is an ancient Historical Landmark of the city. Its been standing for over 2,000 years, but people are worried, as it may soon be consumed by the sea.
Every year erosion tears away at the coastline, and the strip of sand seperating it from the pillar, grows narower. This historical structure, may not survive, even as long as 5 years.

    img0018q.jpg

    44017245.jpg

    img0019ms.jpg

    img0026cm.jpg

    img0027cr.jpg

Near the beach some condo's are for sale. These are some of the newest buildings in the city and have amazing ocean front veiws. Prices start at 250,000 amarican dollars for a 1st floor one bedroom. There is some other housing along the beach, but they are bland and crowded.

    img0024o.jpg

    img0025c.jpg

    img0041f.jpg

    img0040nl.jpg

    img0039i.jpg

More twords the eastern portion of the peninsula, there is a small busness district. The Silom Palace Hotel is the "main building" of the area, but many people call it home, as well as work.

nathanthemayor: It's not the image size that is a problem, It's simply the large ammount of images. I make fairly large updates, so they will take a bit to load. For me they don't take long at all, and I have a pretty slow internet connection. The images here on ST I have already reduced to 800x600 to help, plus the mosaics are smaller than that with links instead of me making even more pictures on the page. I'm sorry but theres not much else that i could do.

The Nouadhibou Transit Authority (NTA) has worked in agrement with the Eurasian Multinational Group (EMG) To creat a mass transit system in Nouadhibou. The only current form of it is an old rail track up the coast, which is berly used today.

    nouadhibousubwaymapsept.png

The old Noudhibou Link Station, was torn down. Its central location is making roads in the area too conjested. The rail line will be moved to a different location, to be built at a later date. Many people protested the destruction of the historical station, but it was ultimitly decided that it would be dismantled and re-built in a new location.

    Old Station

    img0058ez.jpg

    New Station

    img0068vj.jpg

The new Station is for the newly constructed/under construction El-Rail/Subway System. Nouadhibou officials are trying to introduce Mass-Transit to the city. A private company financed the construction of the station, if they could build a mini-mall adjacent to the station. I goes upwardz more than anything else, contaning over 1,000 stores up 9 stories. Included is a Field atop the roof.

Going North the El crosses a major avenue.

    img0063g.jpg

    img0064up.jpg

Muion Station Was built inbetween Central Station And North City (Which you will see soon). It used to be an abandoned rail stop, but now is replaced by the El-Rail. Some shops were also built on the exess land.

    img0059ps.jpg

    img0062pt.jpg

South of Central Station, the rail line that goes there has been abandoned for many years.

Almost the entire length of the rail, the El was built right over it to preserve money. A Subway is being planned for many other areas of the city, but in this case, an Elevated Rail would be signifintly cheaper.

    img0065p.jpg

    img0071jk.jpg

    img0072hp.jpg

Were the main avenue used-to cross the abandoned rail, the avenue was ran on the ground and then the El was ran to the Wasbi Dstrict Station. A "poorer" area of the city, where a small powerplant was also built. Oficials were stumped on wether to run a spur here, but because of the powerplant, it was decided to be built.

You've put a LOT of effort into this city. It looks absolutely fantastic, especially with the modern African design and style. You don't see many of these so it's always a treat.

Great job developing the city, placing the flora and adding all the details in. Wonderful work.

Benedict, stocktons_pimp, Archean, The Duke, & hilodecordoba, Thank you all so much! 9.gif

    bannerqs.jpg

NOTE: Links to re-sized pics are below each picture.

    overveiw.jpg

Djado airport is the only airport in Nouadhibou. Djado airport is highly congested, from planes coming in and out all over Northern Africa, Southern Europe And even some locations in the Middle East. The major congestion is not only from congested airspace, but also due it being a one-runway airport, and also the fact that a 4-lane boulevard crosses it. Which means traffic must come to a complete stop when planes land and takeoff.

A new airport is in the planning, to be built further out into the desert. This will significantly reduce congestion at the airport.

    img0006jv.jpg

(Ive based this airport off of 2. The first is some Caribbean airport were planes takeoff/land right over the beach. Another is Gibraltar Airport, were a avenue crosses the runway. Why not build a tunnel? Cause this is so much more kick-ass.  satisfied )

    97455736.jpg

Planes land primarily on the eastern side of the runway. Easterly winds from the ocean help the plane slow-down on the approach, making for an easier landing.

The runway was made on a artificial strip of land, for various reasons. The open ocean and also the large bay, both on each side of the Nouadhibou Peninsula, mean almost no buildings are going to be in the way. Another issue was land conservation. If the runway was parallel to the ocean, a lot of land would be used for nothing.

    img0007hj.jpg

    img0018xc.jpg

The Airport Terminal can only hold 8 planes, another reason for the heavy congestion. And even the small amount of un-used tarmac for waiting planes becomes a problem.

    img0008ei.jpg

    img0022ga.jpg

    img0009nt.jpg

The Air Traffic Control Tower is located near the runway, away from the terminal. It was built just this year.

    img0020b.jpg

    img2ui.jpg

There is a small cargo terminal across the runway. It only has 2 small warehouses, and 2 fuel tanks.

    img0023io.jpg

    img2ui.jpg

Traffic always has to wait when planes cross the runway. "Stoplights" are at the intersection to hold the cars, along with many guards. Today the wait isn't that bad. Some days the traffic gets held up for 2 blocks.

    img3y.jpg

Ill leave today with a teaser for something else in the city. Tongue
