So I've decided to do my first City Journal...

Here's Fromage City!

The empty coastal area of Fromage.

cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_0.jpg

The early industrial period (15,000 people living). Traffic already proving to be a problem!

The city has grown!! (All the cheese export has paid off 17.gif) Sitting on 110,000 people.

The city has diversified into the hi-tech industry with numerous office buildings.

Manufacturing and heavy industries still make up the bulk of the economy.

    Part Two

So the city has grown and some new suburbs have been created due to the high influx of middle and upper class residents. Manufacturing and Hi-Tech industries have attracted a large number of people from around the world to Fromage... Now the population sits on 230,000. Skyscrapers and new office developments are making way near the beach district. City planning has been at work creating a circular expressway to connect the new with the old... and to the new airport!

The old industrial businesses still operate. As seen, lower class high rises in the distance have developed so residents don't need to travel far.

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_3.jpg

Lower class workers head up the mountains to their jobs...

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_5.jpg

Fromage City is well-known for its parks. The city is surrounded by large open wildernesses and in the suburbs lie small areas for the population to chill out on a bite the city's finest cheese!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_6.jpg

The bourgeois district of Elites. These guys are hard to please. But many of their residences lie upon grand avenues onlooking the park and once the high rise CBD is constructed they'll have brilliant views!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_7.jpg

As you can see the large parks separate the old part of the city with the soon-to-be constructed CBD. High-rise apartments have been constructed where middle class workers can head off to their hi-tech workplaces.

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_9.jpg

The CBD has begun construction... STAY TUNED!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_8.jpg

(Hrmm.. As a Side note... my computer is getting extremely lagging playing this city now! Aargh... Damn CXL and its crappy programming...)

    PART THREE!

So rapid growth has caused the city to become extremely busy. Traffic is causing standstills due to the long commute from the suburbs to the CBD... Speaking of which.. the new beachside CBD is now complete!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_13.jpg

Fromage now looks pretty different compared to its early township days. Now its a hustling bustling city of 500,000 people!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_14.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_17.jpg

The newly completed office district is a nightmare to get to and living in the inner suburbs is becomming very crammed! Plans to extend to the yet untouched western side of Fromage are in process... With the advent of Highways, this should make getting to the city a breeze!

    Nightlife in Fromage City

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_20.jpg

    ...

Okay so I hope whoever has been reading this has been enjoying it! CXL is really fun for this sorta stuff. I think I'm going to have to buy a new computer to keep playing this city though. My laptop just can't hack it. Okay till part 4! Thanks everyone!

Very nice -- it almost looks like twin cities from afar -- i.e. similar to Minneapolis-St Paul etc....

    Quick update!

Here's an update on the current street grid with 830,000 people now living in Fromage.

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_23.jpg

So the west has now begun its development. High Density Heavy industry has taken place in the hills with new low and middle classes moving in. In the distance you can also see that high-rise residential has begun along the coastline. Many of these are filled with wealthy executives wanting convenient access to the city but also a serene view!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_21.jpg

So now the city is nearing 1 million people and in order to curb the intense traffic, new industries are being constructed on the outskirts of the city. Manufacturing and more Heavy Industries are planned for the outer fringe whilst the wealthy make their way to occupy the inner city.

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_24.jpg

    STAY TUNED!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_26.jpg

The city now sits on 1,008,000 people!!! The Western Residential district has sprouted large skyscrapers and even a revolving restaurant. Citizens have had to sprawl to the mountains as land in the city begins to become scarce. The new highway runs through the middle of the city and connects the high-tech industries to the outside world!

Hrmm well, its just practice really to understand how the curving system works.

Generally you want to curve at a small gradient. If you curve too much, the road looks a bit odd.

Hope that helps? Next posting, I will see if I can show a picture of what i mean.

It does look like twin cities, a bit like Surfer's Paradise over here in Australia.

So this is how I achieve my curvy roads most of the time. Quite simple!

Basically start with a piece of straight road:

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_0-1.jpg

This will make the start of the curve and is more effective than just using the curve tool straight away.

Next pick the curve road tool... and you can begin curving!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_1-1.jpg

A smaller gradient of curve will look better. So you really have to play around with it until you get it right.

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_2-1.jpg

And that's all there is too it! The one above I used a combination of curvy and straight roads. It is REALLY hard to create  a perfect circle and I've tried and have given up many times. It's just really tedious. I'm sure it can be done if you work at it though.

    Another update!

Okay so it has been a while since I've played cities XL... I'm hoping they will patch it soon to make the game run better. At the moment Fromage city is getting frustrating due to its size of 1.5 million people now!

    Anywho! Here's some new pictures.

    Current street layout...

As you can see, a number of open spaces are being filled quickly! Some parks have been developed on-top of in order to fit new luxurious hi-rises. To the west of the CBD, the mountains have been altered in order for new wealthy elites to move in. However some new parks have been built on old farmland to the east of the city.

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_3.jpg

Hi-rises are quickly filling the skyline!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_10.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_4.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_5.jpg

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_9.jpg

The western development that I spoke of a few posts ago has undergone some massive fast-tracks!

Recently constructed terrace houses have had to be replaced with larger complexes. This has brought the hi-rise boundary closer inland and is now edging onto the suburbs. Some residents are unhappy with this change and therefore new low-rise residential was constructed!

    cxl_screenshot_fromagecity_6.jpg

The wealthy residents of the city fringe prefer their parklands yet still enjoy some fancy city views!
