Directed mass transit (bus lines)

Lately I've been trying out the idea that a bus line terminates in a specific place and collects riders from a specific district.  Surprisingly, this works.  I placed some bus stops on an avenue in a commercial region and some in a residential area close by.  Almost all the Sims took the bus to work in the commercial area.

This works if the area is not connected by road to another area that has bus lines.  As soon as you cross connect your areas or pods, the whole thing becomes much more chaotic.

The trick also works if you have an isolated pod of industrials with attached commercial and residential.  I think of it as ex-urbia as I do this on large tiles only.  It is the only one with enough room to have sizable small towns that are complete.

Eventually, of course, as you become more metropolitan, these areas perforce merge.

I tried a similar experiment, but with a small suburban town and a CBD. As long as you completely cut off the busway, it will work.

I normally just randomly stick a bunch of bus stops all over the place and see that all my major roads have 10-20 buses on them, the residental streets same amount. And then I find that buses travel all over the place, they literally are everywhere where there is a bus stop. However station usage only is 8-9. I guess minimal mass transit usage maybe what you get if you don't have some sort of plan for it.

You could use traffic control lots to help... Linky

That way you can make "bus lanes".

Hope this helps :-D

Yup, these lots make controlling traffic designs like this a breeze, you can do some really neat stuff with them.
