Welcome to our conversation.

One assumes you mean standard ground rail.  If you have stations on the lines it should work.

The important thing about passenger rail is that there should not be a route to work that is shorter than the rail (as the crow flies, alas).  You can arrange this by not having any roads that lead to your industrial complex.

For freight rail, the freight will go from the industrial complex if there are no shorter roads leading from it.  Your freight rail must go to an edge of the tile or to a data sink like a seaport.  Freight goes to the great bit bucket in the sky when it exits a tile.  To make freight rail work, it is not bad practice to put actual rail spurs into the industrial zones.  Any industry that has an adjacent rail line will put its freight directly on the train.  Other than that, you need freight rail stations adjacent to the industrial zone or even inside it.

If you really want your rail system to work, isolate your industrial zone from roads going away from it.  Force your Sims to take the train to work.  This is very hard to do with a commercial zone, but you can force the Sims through that zone by placing the passenger rail station at the end of your main drag.  This will increase the traffic on your central business district main drag, and make the commercial lots happy as well.  You may need one road that leads away from your industrial area to make garbage collection work.

If you are not seeing trains, increase your graphics settings.  I run everything at max.

This sounds like you might have installed the wrong driving-side NAM component. It sometimes happens when just clicking through the installation procedures without checking each one. Is NAM something you recently installed? If so, did you choose the correct drive-side option for your game - left or right side driving? The NAM option needs to match the side the vehicles drive on in your game. If you need to re-install NAM, remove it from your Plugins and reinstall, choosing the correct drive-side option.

Classic sign of the one problem with NAM, its really easy to mess up the install :-P

Hey CaptCity... is there anyway to make the installer recognise which side your game drives on?

Installing anything requires attention from the loose nut holding the mouse.

I would rather doubt it. At least not with the installer creation program (or whatever it's called) being used. Maybe so, read below. In the mean time, as Moose so humorously put it, it's really up to the person installing NAM to know what's needed and what's wanted and make the appropriate selections.

And moving this to Modding - Transit Networks

Actually, this isn't the case; perhaps you misinterpreted something I said in an earlier post.

The Manhattan distance (approximately "as the crow flies") is used only to determine at which jobs the Sims will work.  Once this is determined, the traffic simulator will aways find the fastest route there, even if its distance is longer.  Only travel time counts at this point in the calculations, and passenger rail is almost three times faster than car travel.  My industrial areas are fully connected to the rest of my cities with roads, yet the passenger trains leading into them always carry a decent amount of traffic.  This is even in cities full of subways, which makes sense, since passenger trains are a third faster than subways.

I believe that it's theoretically possible, since the NAM uses the NSIS installer, which can execute an arbitrary program; it should be possible to ask Windows what country you're in, and set the driving side accordingly.  Although the NAM is moving toward a Java-based installer, the same should still apply there.  I'll bring this up with the NAM Team; I think it would be a good idea.
