Agriculture.  Staying in one place and growing things instead of hunting/gathering and moving on.

Mans greatest discovery to me would have, yes been agriculture, also I like copper too. What the modern world wouldn't do without electricity I have no idea.

There are many discoveries worthy of consideration for the greatest. Agriculture, yes, and penicillin as mentioned in the Inventions thread. I would like to go in a slightly different direction and suggest physics.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Assumeing our high energy culture dosen't collapse the number of
medical advances the project will produce will be endless.
Then again it will probably only be used to make your junk biger. 41.gif

@astronelson:  But isn't physics invented?  I don't think you discover physics, but natural law is the discovery, and phsics was invented to study it.

Similary, someone discovered the 3,4,5 triangle, by playing with pieces of string, no doubt, and went on to invent geometry, then mathematics.

And I think you do discover physics, which I take to be the collection of natural laws that govern the universe. Our understanding of it is imperfect, but we still discovered it.

Also, I think mathematics, as a field, came before geometry, even if it was just basic arithmetic.

Well, I'll concede your point, somewhat, on arithmetic.  However, it wasn't until the Arabs invented zero and positional notation that arithmetic took off.  If you were an Egyptian priest of the time of the Pharohs, can you imagine doing ordinary sums with a system based on 60?  Or, nearer, how about the Romans?  Just try to do a sum in Roman numerals.  Long division was done by slaves who had special talent and traiining.  Before Al Gebr, arithmetic was a chancy thing.  He lived a long time after Euclid.

Man's greatest discovery for me is... North Korean music. It's so happy and cheerful! I love it!
