Downloading regions

It's been a while since I've downloaded some regions from the stex but I can't seem to get it to work anymore. I have the config and the grayscale and I open the region ingame. The game renders the config correctly, but when I go to the ctrl+shift+alt+r menu and open the grayscale, nothing happens. I remember a screen appears saying "creating new city" or something but I could be wrong. Is the game just taking a long time to render or am I doing something wrong?

I don't know if this will help, and I don't know if it depends on the browser being used (I use IE7)... But when I want the correct greyscale image, I have to right-click on the "Download" link and use the "Save Target As..." function. Otherwise the image I get when downloading won't render in the game. Just a thought...

Also, are you sure the images are greyscale and not .SC4M files? They would require SC4Mapper to render. Thought I'd ask...

I'm saving the picture that pops up after clicking "download" on the popup you get when you click a file in the stex. It's grayscale and saved as a .bmp

Yes, that's what I was getting, but I never had any luck using .bmp greyscale files in the game. I have seen where some say .bmp does work and some say it has to be .jpg. I have always assumed the greyscale needs to be .jpg. If you use the method I described above (right-clicking), it will give you a .jpg file that I have found to always work in the game.

I had this problem when I made a region in gimp. I was trying to save it as a png, then a bmp, and it wouldn't load it either. I looked at a couple of articles and one of them said the image had to be an 8-bit grayscale (not color) image. So I just changed the picture's mode (in gimp, go to Image -> Mode -> Grayscale), saved it again as a bmp, and it worked. Apparently with a .jpg it doesn't matter.

Now my only problem is some kind of glitch where the bottom edge of my 4x4 cities look all messed up in the region view. Something screwy about the way SC4 loaded and then saved each 4x4's picture. I've tried loading a city, then resaving it, use edge reconciliation, but nothing helps. Bottom edge is always messed up looking. So I have my region loaded, but it doesn't look nice in region view. :-( I've been trying to look around the forum to see if anyone has had this problem, and how to fix it.

If you mean the "blue bar" at the bottom of large cities, that usually results from rendering at high resolutions (1600x1200 or above). Sometimes you can get rid of it by lowering the resolution and then re-save each affected city. After that, try the higher resolutions. If that doesn't do it, you might try re-rendering at a lower resolution.

Oh man, that was exactly what the problem was. Thank you so much. It makes total sense, but I never would have guessed the resolution was causing that. 9.gif
