On version 10.04 (Beta 2), this game is available as a regular inistall under the update manager.  I have it loaded and it is an improved version of the orginal SimCity.

Because SC4D doesn't run on my machine anymore due to the messed up nvidia drivers under wine, I am becoming addicted to this version.

One of the nice things about Ubuntu is that it will happily coexist with other operating systems or can be run from a CD.  Maybe if we get enough interest we could get a section started on the board.  The source is published!  Programmers unite, we have only our own abilities to help improve this game.

I have searched on it briefly, but I didn't see much. What is the main differences between SC (classic? 2000?) and Micropolis?

I don't think there are any/many. It is based on the original Sim City (not 2000). EA released the source code free, but not the rights to the name Sim City - hence they don't use the original's name. Micropolis is also available on Linux, something that Sim City may not have been.

I don't recall SimCity having sound bytes when you pick up zone items and other things off the palette.  This version is reworked for linux, and there is now a .deb download that can be installed using the debian program dpkg.  This is the installer for both debian and ubuntu.

Since it is open source, if you want to fool with it, you can.  SC is so old that EA probably has no further interest in it.  Since the code is available, I expect a large programming pool, and some kind of coordinated effort on it.  Hope this happens over the years, as it does need improvement.  A manual for the game would be nice.

A manual is provided in /usr/share/games/micropolis.

    Here is a screenshot:

That looks like the same SimCity Classic that came with SimMania.

"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

Yup, except that the Free Software Foundation has a source licence from EA.  It has been ported to Linux.
