So, it's happened. The successor to the now six-year old Nintendo DS has been announced.

The working title - working title, mind you, this is like "Nintendo Revolution" - is "Nintendo 3DS".

This is playing on the fact that, supposedly, it will somehow feature "3D" display.

We'll have to see where this goes.

Regarding 3D, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has previously stated  that Nintendo would need to look into the "possible health effects" of playing video games in 3D for prolonged periods of time.

quote>

Watch out kids, after you are finished beaming 3D gamma rays into your skull you are going to need to go to an Avatard focus group to find your way back into the dull real world! 17.gif

I laughed, but seems interesting, including the fact that no one at Nintendo seems to agree with what the other is saying.

Nintendo has lost it's edge, it's systems are no longer as high tech as they use to be. As soon as Sony releases a PSP2, the new 3DS will be low tech as well.

Nintendo isn't trying to be high tech anymore, though. Instead, they've been going for new innovative things... and so far, it's really been working for them. The Wii has sold far better than the PS3 or Xbox 360 has. And DS sales are double those of the PSP.

If past trends are any indication, Sony will release a new handheld that has more powerful hardware which will appeal more to hardcore gamers, but to the public at large will not be all that attractive.

Nintendo's product, meanwhile, will be considerably less powerful, kiddy, and gimmicky, but it will sell better overall, because while it will not appeal to hardcore gamers, it will appeal to everyone else.
