This thread is for discussing Australia in general. It was originally just the politics, but popular demand widened the field.

Remember:

1. Discuss the issues, not each other.

2. Don't stray too far off topic.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Only to people living there. The rest of the commonwealth (and maybe even the Yanks) might be fascinated by politics in the antipodes. Unless you have a smashing crisis, we don't here much hear in the great northern waste.

Boring? perhaps. Full of idocy? very much so.

For example, currently. The government had given out rebats for installing insulation in your house over the last year and a bit. Anyway, some dodgy contractors using metal foil insulation were not doing it correctly, causing electical problems, killing 3 workers in the last year or so. Yesterday, the minister for... wait, what is he minister for anyway?, anyway, he said that the government would pay for inspections of every house with the insulation installed (and if faults were found, the contractors that installed it would have to pay for repairs). Now, the opposition are calling for him to resign or something stupid. That is the kind of crud that goes on in our politics.

Peter Garrett is Minister for Environment. Wait, that's Penny Wong's job! What does anybody in Parlament do?

With the sale of QR, I agree with the restructure. It's been needed for a long time. However, the complete seperation of QR and its coal/freight division, QR National, is plain dumb Capn' Bligh! Why the heck do you sell the bits that make money?

What makes you think that is different from other Parliamentary Democracies? In Canada, the main opposition party has resurrected the dead horse named abortion.

i don't partially like Peter Garrett the poly, I do like Peter Garrett the front man to mightnight oil,

but anyway I’m going to stick up for him hear, it's not the metal insulation that’s the problem ether, the problem is doge electrical systems in people houses, or should i say old electrical systems, the reason people are dieing is because "back in the day" they used to uses cotton braded wirers install in split metal conduits, over time the insulation brakes down and the metal conduct becomes live, the other reasons is dodgy "handyman’s" try to be electricians.  But people are going up into a roofs and crabbing and standing on them thus seriously injuring them,  the problem I also is the people getting the “free insulation” aren’t generally the richest people in the world so they would have been putting of the rewiring of there house. Thus compounding the problem.

She may as well be. What's the discernable difference?

Saving the environment and preventing climate change.

By preventing climate change, you save the environment and by saving the environment, you are preventing climate change. The jobs obsolete each other.

Hardly. Plastic waste or toxic contamination of the ground is hardly going to effect global warming. Yet its very (and in my opinion, undratedly against modern climate change discussion) important.

I don't think the problem is old wires, but rather dodgy contractors. The "start up a business, hire a few blokes, try make a killing with all the orders" type people. And no, i don't blame garret either.

A bit off topic but

There is something I never understand about politics, is why do people follow a party and vote for them regardless of there policies, I work with used to work with a lot of liberal voters, and they where so one eyed, they could seen anything ells, it rally annoyed me. I just don't understand, I follow politics, not heavily, but enough to care, and I vote for the people how I think will do the best job.

Well, mostly i think its because of what you grew up in. Generally speaking, a child growing up in a heavily democratic family will grow up as a democrat. Just as if you grew up in a Jewish family, or a soccer(football) family

well i can understand the football part , hence my logo, my hole family go for the dog's, but that's not to say I cant see any other team on the park, you have to give credit where credit is due. my favorite ALF player doesn't even play to the bulldogs ( he player of Sydeny) anyway it just annoys me when the Polys opposes a bill or something for the sake of opposing, there been allot a good ideas but there dead in the water because one party doesn't have the numbers to pass it, then when they do get the number the rush all these bills through  even the crappy one, because if they don't do that then nothing will ever happen, if both side had a bit more trust thing would run a lot more smoothly.

Anyway Peter Garrett better start writing more tunes, because he won't be a polly for much longer. Maybe the first one he should write is
"who will install the bats,
who will make my nice  house worm
now the last of insulation company's has gone"

Cutting the grant liuke that yet promising to reenstate it in 4 months is absolute lunacy. Noone at all will install insulation now for the next 4 months, 95% of jobs will probably be lost.

this government has been the biggest crock since they got into office. i have never seen such a swooning of the media before in politics. they probably would go into the big brother house if that show was still on TV, and would give them good ratings. they are TV personalities more than politicians.

behind the cameras, i think it must be financial chaos. we are so much debt again since they wanted to buy their popularity, and the scale of debt has not sunk in to the australian voters. im in the defence force, and they have started tearing it apart, despite the promise of increased spending.

sadly, i think they will win the next election. the liberals are leaderless and lost. if Costello was still around, he just might of won the next election.

for the record, i am not aligned to any party, just saying it how i see it.

I cant vote in the next election cause I'm underage, but I'll be able to the election after that.

Personally I find the liberal party going in the wrong direction, but I dont want Rudd anymore. My boss was saying, "Why do we have to vote? What if you have no political interest or don't like either party?"

Anyway, Vote 1 for the Simtropolis Party (the PM is Dirktator... wait... the Supreme Lord of the Earth is Dirktator).

yah who am i going to vote for, "the Greens" maybe ummm on thanks, the pity is I would still vote liberal but the party thinks climate change is the same as climate control a feature you get when you buy a new car,  I don't know if climate change is real but it's better to be safe then sorry. Plus we relay to heavily on coal and oil and I think it time for a change. and climate change is just the thing to help that along.

Not necessarily. A few years ago two independents held the balance of power. Also you want someone who is going to work for your local area. Politics is not just a matter of sitting in the house.

Voting is important because it prevents minority interests from gaining control of the government agenda.

It's the job of the opposition to oppose, ie to present alternatives, to ensure other points of view are presented and discussed, and to speak for those Australians who would not be in favour of a particular motion. Remember someone voted for them and evidently wanted them to represent their interests. It is in everyone's interest that everyone's interests be heard.
