Are Landfills Sustainable?

How does one keep landfills sustainable for long term? Is it possible to make money from them, or are they always a liability?

It appears that they always cost more than what you could make from them, when you have a "dirty industrial" city with power supply and landfill services that serve a neighbour that is a mega city.

How do you manage an efficient waste management program in this game?

You build a waste-energy plant. Then you set the plant's power output to zero. The facility will not produce any power, but it will continue to incinerate garbage.

I really don't know any way that you can manage landfills for long-term use.

Thanks for that tip. Just a question though. Is that technique designed in to the game as intended or is that an error/bug/exploit?

I have to assume it was an error in the game design. Don't take my word for it, as I am not a programmer.

I don't like the garbage system as it was, as landfills don't really cost ~50 to maintain once filled to capacity. And you can't really burn everything to solve garbage problems.

I personally use the PEG Garbage Chute, which throws garbage off the side of the tile. I don't think it costs anything to maintain, doesn't pollute and solves the problem of the eternal garbage.

I agree with Rionescu, the PEG Garbage Chute is a must-have for any big city. Although it has a small capacity, you can build a lot of them, and they look cool too. 4.gif

I have found that building waste to energy incinerators and recycling plants greatly increases the efficiency of the landfills and allows them to garbage much faster. I use these to avoid having to build too many landfills in the city. It only costs more money, however.

I hope that this helps. -blakesterville.
