Maybe it could be all of the above. The beltway sniper was the same deal, it was terrorism but the guy was insane to begin with. It's different from a young Egyptian from a rough neighborhood joining Al-Qaeda.

What's really disturbing to me is the guy was a psychiatrist, the first line of defense against something like this from happening in the first place. "Who watches the watcher" scenario I guess.

When I think of how terrorists should be treated I think back to a speech by a British politician in response to a massacre by native people of British citizens in the Americas in the colonial period. It was bad then but would be entirely appropriate for terrorists. "We should treat them as the most vile creatures who ever crawled on the surface of the Earth and who's utter annihalation would be of great benefit to all mankind."

I also liked one response to people who study "what goes through a Jihadists mind" that the best possible thing to go through a Jihadists mind would be a 10mm hollowpoint.

From the native people's point of view, those colonists could have been regarded as invaders who are out to take over their land.  and, look, that's what happened.  The native's actions could easily fall under the umbrella of "protecting their way of life".

Interesting how the people being annihilated there are not part of "all mankind".

Don't get me wrong:  I do not, in any way, support terrorists, suicide bombers, mass shootings, or other forms of killing innocent people.  But I do have a tendency to wonder why people do what they do and, often, the only way to get an answer is to try and see life from their point of view.   It isn't always easy.

I saw a cartoon once.  In it, there were two women, one an American soldier in army fatigues, the other Saudi Arabian woman wearing traditional clothes.  The two women were just standing, staring at each other.

I was told once that was what sparked the problem.  We came into their land with a way of life that was clearly different from theirs.

(Just for the record:  I would like to see all women on the planet have the same freedoms and rights that I have.  I do not anticipate that it will happen in my lifetime.)

An overly bellicose attitude which will only promote stereotypes, justify irrational actions, and not solve the problem at hand in the least.

Well now it seems the heroic female police officer who helped take him down won't be able to be a street cop anymore but hopefully can be a trainer or such. I have nothing but contempt for anyone who murders or attempts to murder a police officer and think they definitely deserve to die - when I was working I donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund: http://www.nleomf.org/

He might not have killed any cops but he did murder soldiers - the heroes who are willing to defend us from those who wish to do us harm as a nation. As far as I'm concerned he should be charged with treason - but he is being charged with murder by the army and I hope he goes before a firing squad.

I Completely agree there is no reason to attack anyone i would rather hear he comminted sucide than this.
