Adding Building Diversity

Here are a list of things that I hope will soon be possible to add.

  • Make buildings with randomized props, if not then,
  • Make lots that point to the same building but to different props (or would a seperate copy of the building be necessary, which which would increase the amount of space taken up on your harddrive)
  • Make buildings with different populations or workers than others (like make a medium density building 10% taller and hire 10% more, or a high density building that is 10-40% smaller and hires 10-40% less, or condos that are in between the size of medium and high density but are grouped in with high density)
  • Make custom buildings that cost the city more but pollute less
  • Make custom parks that absorb the same amount of pollution as SimCity parks do
  • Make leisure buildings with per customer profits (no customers, loose more money; many customers, make a little bit of money) like in City Life
  • Import buildings from City Life
  • A more intuitive fuel industry (I see a possibility for a GEM, complete with biofuel, advertising, new fuel extraction buildings including coal mines and natural gas because coal and natural gas are fuel also; this could go with a utility GEM because many utility companies are in the private sector even though many of them are subsidized)
  • More waste disposal buildings (including sewage treatment plants (pollutes), water treatment plants (reduces air pollution and waste a little bit at a high cost), recycling centers, recycling factories (produce heavy industry), yard waste/compost centers (pollute very little)
  • Green Energy beyond wind power (city life had solar furnaces and nuclear power, cold fusion is unrealistic but it could be a blue print and hot fusion could be a 2 million population reward, I also suggest eliptical solar power (looks like many small satilite dishes with the power coming from boiling and compressing water where all the light is shone at), solar farm furnaces (many flat, adjustable reflective pannels surrounding a tower where all their light is shown), photovoltaic, biomass, hydrogen, etc)
  • Expensive air scrubbers (that obviously reduce air pollution at a high price)

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Most of your list is doable by modding... some would require a bit of testing and tweak but except maybe for the "more intuitive fuel industry" I see nothing very difficult to do... once of course we have a way to convert 3d creations to a format supported by the game... however, it's yet possible to use existing buildings models and edit all their properties without needing for additionnal hd space...

i have to ask, why would you wont to import buildings from city life? those buildings where terrible and had no detail to them what so ever, if you wont any particular building it would be better to recreate it, and probable essayer as well,

I have looked at the buildings in the building customization editor and they look wonderful. They use high resolution textures, have adequate geometry detail without too high polygon counts, and all of them have props (speed tree, playground, tables, fences, etc). When I play the game, the buildings look bad from afar because they are at a much lower detail (especially with lower graphics settings). I like the Suit buildings because they are modern and I love blue. The Fringe and Blue Collar buildings would look at home in a qualified worker neighborhood. Some of the Fringe and Blue Collar buildings from City Life: Edition 2008 made it into the demo even. The Elites would look wonderfully with the other Elites. I would not want low density Have-Not buildings because that would be too unattractive but the medium and high density tenements are OK. The Radical Chic buildings are a little weird but if City Life buildings have their own button (like the medieval pack does), then they would look fine mixed in with Suit buildings.

Of course it would be far easier to have filters for your building styles: North American, European (French), Asian, City Life, Tropical, Super Modern, etc OR French, Colonial, Chicago 1880's, New York 1930's, Modern North American, European Contemporary, Traditional Asian, Ultra Modern, Custom (medieval, City Life, etc), and Tropical.
