Your best mass transit networks!

How did you get your sims to abandon their cars and use mass transit in an effective way?

My best, so far, has been a massive bus network where pedestrian and bus traffic is tripple that of cars.  (my highway leading to the industrial district has something like 400 cars and 5,000 buses).  I put buses about every 5-6 tiles in my zones, and in strategic locations (like right at the "exit" of a roundabout).

I'm using RH and NAM.

So... what are yours, and how did you do it?

Well it depends; if it is in a CBD/Downtown area, the subways have been my best bet. Subways really help ease road traffic. I like when Sims use their cars though so when I use mass transit I only really stick to trains and subways. Never have used a bus stop before. 3.gif

I installed simulator Z in the NAM and now have the opposite problem.. Sims insist on using mass transit even for short distances and all my subway lines are red (even the ones with multiple tubes running next to each other)

That makes the Z sim sound scary.

I haven't really focused on Subways yet, but want to. Its just so expensive to lay and upkeep the subway rails. I usually use Bus and it works fairly well. Currently im trying out Train. I most desire to get into Tram, but its just so difficult to get the track to lay and find and fit the right puzzle pieces that I may not get it for a while. I'm been curious about the Monorail and High Speed Rail but really dont know where to start on those yet. Im not even sure how any of these rail-related types are even different from each other... speeds, types of passengers, etc. All I know is that they are different buildings and costs. I think its just a matter of trying probably and fighting through the failures.

But for me, Bus and Train are what has proven to work. Oh and Ive had good luck with Ferries! They have never failed me yet, but i dont have water in cities too often.

@Shlarin What version of sim Z have you installed, you may have chosen Ultra, I would go with medium. That is a more realistic balance

I had Z installed, Ultra, or something like that, it was one with the huge capacity mod things...anyway, in a city of 500300 sims, 50000 used the bus, 16000 used car, and I can't remember the subway usage, but it was pretty high. That was all on one avenue. The second avenue had a similar amount of people going back and forth on it. Also, I use a road top bus set, which blocks res zoning, but I managed to have a work around that.

Well you don't have to use the puzzle pieces, plop the starter pieces then drag an elevated rail through and destroy the starter piece and you it can be draggable using elevated rail.

Hope that helps so you can start using it!

For sims to use ONLY mass transit, there is a Radical mod for that. Just download the Radical Ordinances mod, which has a TON of useful ordinances. For instance, there are mods were your Sims ONLY ride MT, or where they take the fastest way to work...

Oh that sounds much easier.  Thanks.  Now I just have to find which menu, and which tile is the starter piece.  (I know where the elevated rail is.)
