My larger BAT sets seem to be accumulating materials at a great rate. I open the Material Navigator I have heaps.

I'm sure I'm not using all of them, many appear not to be attached to any object (such as the one highlighted).

My questions to those more experienced... a) can I just remove the ones not in use, and b) how?

Also, I'm finding conflicts in material names when merging one gmax file with another. Does this mean I need to watch the naming of materials too? I gather if I have Mtl#4 in two files and they are different, then if I'm not careful some textures may be replaced.

I haven't run into that problem yet, but then again I tend to not create the library of materials like that either. For some odd reason, I prefer to create new materials for every model - probably need to cut that out for my own sanity. LOL

I am starting to have the same problem and it is creating a large problem. is there a way to remove these maps that are not being used. I merged some roof junk from the Sim Mars site which none came with the textures so i had to put my own on. how in the world do I remove the ones not being used or did not come with the model.

Yes, it is possible to delete them. Just get them into the material editor one by one (like you do if you want to use them on the model) and there is an option to delete them. They are then deleted from the file aswell as from the model.
