If its illegal to own big amounts, but the drugs we're talking about are not things that could be easily home grown, then doesn't it defeat the point? there's still an equal amount of illegal (manufacture and distribution), if not even more because the demand has gone up...

Personally, i'd see this as giving more business to the cartels, not less.

That's what I was trying to say! I wasn't saying that they were gonna bring it across in intervals. I was saying that Mexicans weren't going to be afraid of getting in trouble in Mexico, so there would be more people bringing large amounts over.

I don't know, but my roomate has a baggie of rather funky looking swag. Been telling him to hide it in his car or something because I don't want to be liable for it. He thinks he's some kind of hippie 30.gif

Anyways, I don't think it should be legal, I just agree that minor possesion should always be a misdemeanor type offense.

Always thought the "tough on crime" mindset was a failure(excluding murder, rape, arson, the capital crimes). Consistent enforcement and punishments that are unpleasant but do not remove a person from productive society or destroy a young person's future work better than randomly giving a few unlucky criminals felonies while the rest of society burns.

I think the Mexicans decriminalized minor possession because the police shall concentrate their work on fighting the organized crime that does not deal with small amounts. If the police has to waste the time with drug consumers, they have less time to fight the cartels. Instead of catching small fishes they can concentrate on catching big ones now.

By the way in the most european countries there is no punishment for the possession of small amounts of drugs. It is still illegal and if the police catches someone, they have to confiscate it. But if someone isn't catched every few months, nothing more happens. In the netherlands, there are some shops with a license to sell marijuana legally. For some years that was possible in switzerland too. In spain and the czech republic there are big lobbies for drug legalization and also politicans that want to legalize it.

I doubt there would be much of an increase in the # of Users, or how in much they used.

I very much doubt the the fact that its illegal is why those that dont use drugs dont use them.

When cannabis was legalized in the Netherlands, consumption went down. Not only that, consumption of "hard" drugs (heroin, amphetamines, crack, etc) also went down, due to the separation of cannabis from the other drugs.

Want to know how to stop all the smuggling of illegal drugs into the US? Legalize them. Distribute, regulate and control them. Educate people with the truth. Suddenly the cartels have some new competition, and its not gangs. It's the government. Of course, with Obama not even wanting to discuss the issue of cannabis legalization, I don't see this happening any time soon at all.
