ok first i must say i love the game but scan't stand the transit systems and the sims who use them. its annoying the sims would rather drive to work and jam up all the roads instead of using the train which goes to the same place there driving to. no sims use it and yes its hooked up right. i use the sim z med plug, is there one better to make them use transit? i mean some can drive and some can use transit. and i have 4 cities connected 2 with all zones and 1 with comm and 1 with ind and there pretty built up and grown but when you query the sub/bus and tran stations no one is using them so i ask how are the sims getting to those jobs when there is no congestion at all in the data view? thank you

Yeah, tell that to thse people:

This is going to the Bay Bridge in San Francisco/Oakland. 4 BART trains go to SF, and there are 32 Transbay Bus lines as well. I use one of those bus lines, and am amazed at all the people who--stupidly--insist on driving.

But I feel your pain. It helps me to remeber that even one city tile on SC4 is far bigger than past incarnations of the game. The regions are a bonus! But again, I understand and agree with your issues.

I use all the stock transportation networks in my cities and I can tell you, the mass transit systems can work the way you want them to. In some of my cities my rail networks move more people than the road networks.

Assuming your game is not suffering from a bug (such as the endless commuter problem or a mod related discrepancy), the most likely reason your rails aren't being used is because they are sufficiently outclassed by your road network. Very often this sort of problem comes down to flawed station placement or a poor track layout. It may be that you don't have enough transit stations, the stations may be inconveniently located, there could be a break or flaw in your track somewhere. Have you tried disabling your road network to force your sims onto your rails? If you gimp your road network and sims still refuse to ride rails at all then you probably have either a bug or a broken track. If you get a weak ridership, that is a few sims using trains but most insisting on using your gimped up road system, then there's probably a problem with your station placement or track layout.

You can make mass transit work and it doesn't require special mods. I do use the nam but that's my only mod and I have cities with extensive and busy subways, monorails and passenger trains (I don't use GLR) but It's not always easy to pull off and there have been times that I have had to intentionally make my road system inefficient in order to force rail usage.

Keep tinkering with it and eventually you'll get what you're lookin for. Good luck!

Listen to shortest straw. HE couldent be more right.

I found for my experience with Surface rail the more stations the better. Also like he said make sure there are NO breaks in you track. some times when you a laying a trak through road or street. or vise versa it can misteriously break the track at the road/rail inter section.  it is wierd i know but i have spent countless hours on going back and making sure there are no breaks.

Also i dont know if you are useing the stock rail stations or not but from my experiance i have found that the stock station doesnt work as well as some of the ones availible for download(e.i. ill Tonkso stations)

yeah, I second the previous two posts. I have great success using train stations, Z Med as well.

I use ill Tonkso's stations as well. Also, I have one called Chicago and Northwestern or something like that, and I think it might be by DK1.

One other tip: try placing a bus station right next to the train station. I've been able to get sims to take the bus to the station, then hop on a train.

I'm not sure about the North Bay, but San Jose's VTA is very unreliable. I used to take it for threes years to get to school and I had to get to the stop an hour before my class in order for me to be on time for class, and it was only two and a half miles away! People are impatient and believe they can get there faster with their cars. Plus, a lot of people fell comfortable i ntheir cars and like driving. I'm one of them! But if I'll save time, then BART all the way!...if we had it...poop...

Anyways, just make it inconvienent for them to drive.
