I have a nuke plant at max funding and 95% plant condition. Is this safe? What will make it blow up? When should I tear it down?

Hi, moneymoneymoney,

I haven't used this plant much, but it does appear to be aging a bit.  I would think you would get an adviser warning before it melts down, as with other plants.  However, I would keep a close eye on it and if it drops anymore in efficiency, I would replace it.  If it does melt down, the radiation lasts 10,000 years, and any RCI buildings will become dilapidated if placed there (nothing will grow).  If the worst happens, you can always exit without saving.  To replace it, just pause the game, bulldoze it, and plop a new one.  Nuclear is common in real life, but Peg's Geothermal is my favorite power plant; pretty good power and low pollution.  He also has some sort of new waste to energy one that I just downloaded.  It's Green!  3.gif

Have fun.

Hello moneymoneymoney,

Most power plants can be safely operated down to 50% condition - as long as you keep the funding up - before you replace them. Just to be safe - I try to replace my power plants at about half of their advertised expected life span. Then again, I'm so safe that I always enact the Nuclear Free City Ordinace (and run coal plants in neighbor cities until I can get a fusion - a.k.a. Hydrogen - power plant going).

rkddudgns - I don't know that anyone has actually sat through the half-life times - but take our word for it - it is a VERY LONG TIME! Some of the modders once found the reference to this - and 10,000 Sim Years sounds like the minimum requred before there is any chance of cleaning up radiation; that is - it probably will be longer!!

No detail is too small to be micromanaged.

Is there anyway to clean up the radiation with a cheat? I forgot about two old plants, and I don't wanna wait that many years on my best city.

Hi, KlownMaster,

Welcome to Simtropolis.  I searched the STEX and found this, which claims to suppress radiation as long as the building is in place.  I haven't tried it, but comments do not seem to indicate any problems.

Enjoy the game.
