i am moderately computer literate.  i am about to format my PC and i have a question about making backups of my cities.  i am developing the "Fairview" region which is included in the game.  i have put a lot of work into it and want to save it.  when i go to the regions\Fairview folder in my directory, all of the files in there are named "City - New City (#)"  with a different number.  shouldnt the names of the files change when i create a city in that region?  im worried that if i put this file into my backup drive it wont save the cities.  i need some guidance.

here is a screen shot of the folder

Backup the entire folder for the region. Even cities you haven't yet developed get their files written to when neighbor cities are saved.

When you're ready to restore, just delete the existing Fairview region and copy your backup there in its place.

You should look in the My documents\SimCity4\regions folder for your developed cities. The Program Files region folder is a backup for the default regions that come with the game.

I think he's talking about backing up his developed region though... the copy in Program Files\Regions is if you ever want to restore the original undeveloped (or semi-developed e.g. Berlin) Maxis-provided regions.

The folder shown is the Progam Files region folder, that is why there is no named city that has been incorporated. That is not the folder that needs to be backed up, the important folder is the complete [My] Documents\SimCity 4 folder, which will include any plugins, saved images, and regions that have been worked, etc.

Backup the "Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\" folder [include subfolders], then once you have the game installed again,  overwrite the new folder with the saved folder, thus saving having to install the update patches again.
