A rather cool article from the Independent.

Save the planet? Buy it

Millionaires are purchasing entire ecosystems around the world and turning them into conservation areas. Their goal? To stop environmental catastrophe. Jonathan Franklin reports with pictures by Morten Andersen

Sebastián Piñera, one of the richest men in Chile, has a CV that includes introducing credit cards to his country and many large-scale property developments. Now he has added what every chic millionaire needs - his own private ecosystem.

Parque Tantauco, which Piñera created in 2005, is on one of South America's largest islands, Chiloé, off the coast of Patagonia.

Yep, it is a good idea, until some rich idiot decides to screw the environment for more money (in this case, it happened before).

That's all well and good, but these people are mortal and someday someone will have to inherit that land from them... and will their heirs look upon the land the same way? Being green is in chic right now. Somehow I don't foresee that lasting forever since fashion trends don't work that way. They're never permanent. They come in and go out.

Still, the intention is good. And ya gotta give 'em credit for doing something meaningful with the money rather than blowing it on sports cars and houses the size of high schools.

It's good to see somebody using their money to buy property for a just cause. Too bad most other people only buy land for developments.

Wonder if they could put it in trust for say 200 years or something were no development can take place.

No kidding. I can only imagine a Logging Company buying a large patch of forest for "conservation", just like how Phillip Morris has that "quit-Smoking" campaign on their website.

Wow! I didn't know that. 21.gif
