I have a new laptop with Windows Vista on it.  I used to be able to play this game without it crashing on my old crappy desktop but I have problems with the game crashing on my laptop.  Is there any way to fix this?

what are the specs, and are you running 64-bit vista, real the only way i know to fix it would be to install windows xp, vista has compatibility issue with several games and other programs.

Vista is not the problem, it is more stable with SC4 than XP, or earlier Windows. Most crashes are caused by plugin conflicts, or faulty plugins. Which might not be noticeable with a slow computer, and would be with a faster computer. Some AMD dual processors need the AMD Dual Core Optimizer, that can be found at the AMD web site.

Make sure your video, and sound drivers are up to date.

I've got troubles with it also. Just tried to load up a city tile and then the game crashes, and shuts down. Mine is 2GB RAM and 320GB HD. I've downloaded NAM, Olympic Terrain Mod and some growable lots. No idea of whats happening to it.

If other city tiles do not crash the game, look into the plugins. Especially if you built ports (seaports or airport cargo), and you use both BSC and Pegasus ports. There is also an off-chance that a third party port that does not comply with either the Pegasus or the BSC port master file can cause crashes.

If all your city tiles for a region cause CDT's, but other regions load, then you certainly have a buggy plugin somewhere. Try to think back what you recently downloaded and remove that first, to see if that solves the problem. Otherwise only the long and ardeous process works: remove all but the essential plugins (NAM, SAM if you have it, any official patches from Maxis). Test if the region now loads - never mind the brown boxes - you are not saving it if it does load. The start by bringing in one quarter of your plugins at a time, testing each time if it still works. The moment you get a CTD after restoring plugins, you know where to look for the faulty one.

If none of this helps, only a clean reinstallation will do the trick.

I did this and the buggy plugin was actually the Olympic Terrain Mod. That's so weir 'cause I had it when I used to have XP, but I'll try with Columbus again. Now I'll have to be careful with some plug ins, they might crash game again (and it will be time loss also)

    Thanks
