Confusion towards Plugins folder

So, I'm kind of a newb at downloading lots, excuse me if this is a stupid question but:
  If I download a lot, once I am finished extracting it etc., do I put the lot folder in the plugins folder or just the .dat file in the plugins folder?

Put everything that was in the zip file in the plugin folder. It might help you in the future if you create a new folder for each download (or individual creator).

You might also want to exclude any images and readme's that came with the download, only once you've read them though! It probably won't cause a problem at first, but when your plugin folder begins to grow, the images & readme's might slow the game load times.
