I had this idea in my last CJ to create a realistic ghetto.

-low wealth apartments and tenents
-few police stations, schools, ect,
-lots of alleys and paved space

these are distinctly American in style and appearence...
and nearly all R$ with minimal R$$ and CS$

here you can see the only police station and fire station in this city.
also lots of alleys and paved parking.

I left the trees as abandoned terrain instead of placing plazas, parks, ect.

Here is a ghetto of one of my cities.

<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files/Highdres.jpg align=baseline>

My intention was to pack as many R$ sims as possible in a very dense area.
The lots have been formed by selectuvely marking buildings as historical, and when 2 adjacent 2x3 lots were formed I unmarked them and waited for them to be aggregated (you need high demand too).
For the Large Tennements to appear desirability must not be very-very low, just low to medium, so a large elementary school and some hospitals are necessary. Due to the very high density, they can easily be clogged, so I set bus and ambulance funding to zero,  the coverage radius is still large enough (this saves money too).

<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files/Hospital12.JPG align=baseline>

More than 60000 sims live in this neighbourhood, and by adding progressively new zones (with hihger desirability, high schools, parks, better commute times etc) the area remains a slum, cause mid- and high-wealth sims move to the new zones!

Here's my hood for the good ol' triads, located in Los Porablos, an LA-style city.  Notice a laundrymat where they make their dodgy deals...

aleking,

I know it's a bit off topic, but where did you get those blacktop highways, as opposed to the standard grey ones?

Thanks

Those are black top highways are avenues. You'll find them in your Roads menu.

A Ghetto from one of my cities.
Sadly, it was all lost due to some mysterious crash.

    Yesterday I was realy nice working on getting a ghetto of the ground in a corner of my city. Some 2400 Resident buildings were rising (I have the Dutch version so I do not know the english names). So I placed a fenced playpark between them. You know the kind of parks you see in NYPD or (older TV) Hillstreet Blues. When suddenly my nice ugly highrises turned into medium sized R$$ tower blocks and horrror (chills run through my spine) a R$$$ right next to the playpark.
    Grumble, forgot to make the R$ highrises historical. 32.gif
    What I am trying to say that Simcity4 runs sometimes games with you. When you plan on making a ghetto, none get of the ground and when you plan to make a nice R$$$ area, it turns into a R$ ghetto.

    I'll post some pictures soon (when I find the time)

    Wow Aleking. Nice use of Bats such as the escort service, Lappers and Peg's alleys. It makes your ghetto look very natural.
    I will have a look on your CJ.[:0]

    Behold Ganton, and all its slummy glory!

    New%20City-Oc34t.jpg
    The worst neighbourhood, Ganton. The main street going diagonal, Anderston Blvd. is an area you shouldn't consider driving down.

    South Ganton, A bit better then the rest of West Central Betterburg, but still in decline after the shutdown of a couple of automotive plants.

    I made this ghetto on perpose so as to make it more realistic. 31.gif

    This is so true! It happens to me ALL the time !

    Here is my best ghetto ever. Note that all the buildings were grown. I managed this by allowing only 1 tileset to grow in the city (it's the NY or Chicago tileset).

    <ahttp://membres.lycos.fr/ragegrandtheftauto3/images/sc4/slums.jpg align=baseline>

    Here is another smaller one that I like a lot. I spent a lot of time on this one making all the details and stuff.

    Picture 1. I like the big squared building on the right. Realy ugly (in a good way) and also the 6 tall ones standing on the left. How do you manage your transport with only streets?
    Picture 2. I realy like the brown building with the satalite dishes. It's a pitty that there's one of Chicago's $$R buildings to the left though.5.gif

    Sorry for the new post. I finally got to save some of my pictures:

    Here is one of my gettos. I am very fond of this one as I managed to make almost all the building historical. Some additions were build later at the lower right side corner and they immediatelly wemt R$$$.
    Note the nice playground somewhere stuck between all that brick and concrete.

    1) Well, I provided the ghetto with an extensive commuting options. I put a train station right in the middle only for them and put several bus stops all around the blocks. The streets are only used by buses and pedestrians who walk to the train station. The Sims who use their cars take the highway that can be seen on the right bottom of the picture. I planned all my transportation layout in this area in fonction of this highly populated ghetto.

    2) This ghetto wasn't planned at all. The Tina Tenement building just grew there and because I love this building, I decided to let some other R

    You guys have got the construction of ghettos down to a fine art. 3.gif Whether that's a good thing or not, is subjective.

    I suppose that making realistic ghettos is too, something that requires skill and patience, waiting for that nuclear power plant to have an effect. 18.gif
