55 die in Moroccan mattress factory fire

Moroccan police have arrested the owner and the manager of a Moroccan mattress factory engulfed by a fire that killed at least 55 people.

An emergency officer said managers had locked in staff during work hours to stop theft, trapping them in the fire yesterday.

When the fire engulfed the building, some workers jumped out of windows to safety, but many women workers were too scared to jump and became trapped and burned to death.

55 people died in the fire, including 35 women. There were 17 people injured.

The fire apparently started because of a short circuit on the ground floor. Police said equipment was not maintained properly.

The plant's owner, Adil Moufarreh, and his son Abdelali Moufarreh, who was the manager, have been taken into custody after being questioned by police.

The building had a ground floor and three upper floors. It contained flammable material.

A worker said that there were no emergency exits, the doors were locked and the fire extinguishers were empty...

"bad boss"?   I would have gone with "criminally negligent scumbag".

I hope they charge him with murder.

This what will happen if a boss doesn't take care of the factories, equiments, and it's workers.....

EDIT: why can't the boss and the manager hire some guards to stop the thefts; instead of locking ALL the doors.

Sounds like a modern day version of an article I had to read regarding a early 1900's Chicago factory fire.  Locked doors, flammable material ignited by fire on the first floor, people jumping from the top floor or not wanting to jump, etc.  They say history repeats itself, but I never anticipated something like this. 34.gif

EDIT:  Remembered the date wrong.  Corrected after Duke's post.

It's amazing what one little wire can do, isn't it? This is why you should check all your equipment reguarly.

    Duh..

Seriously, what good comes of locking people in a factory? Unless gaurds are there to beat them to work, they most likely won't, and like this is an example of, it usally leads to a fire hazard. Also, not charging the Fire Extinguishers? This is just a bad idea from the getgo...Do they not have standards about this in Morrco?

At least this guy is getting charged....Not that it really helps, all things considered...

They are called Sweat shops. locked in an watched every minute and either live and work there or are either searched beofre they leave or live in the factory. The article didnt say if  the workers both lived and worked at the factory, but they were probably undocumented and treeated like trash all the time.

I guess you can say that, but for anyone wondering why they didn't just jump, I'm going to bet a couple of things.  First, this drop was probably from at least one story.  Second, if anyone in this thread had been in that case, it is most probably that only a couple of us would have actually jumped.  It's been proven that only one in six of every people will actually be able to think clearly enough in a situation like that to make the right decision.  Odds are good that the people who didn't jump were too freaked out to do it.

    55 people dead... whoa...

The boss and manager definately do need some time in jail... but I for one wouldn't charge him / them with "murder"... that implies it was premeditated, and as far as we know, he's not the one who triggered the short circuit with the intention to kill 55 of his workers... I do, however, agree with charging him with Criminal Negligence resulting in Deaths, and stuff like that. Simply, he didn't want to have them die, but he didn't seem to care for them, so that's what I'm going for instead.

As for locking them up in the building... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard, in a movie, that Fire Codes are little or no existing in those countries in that area? So, it it's true, then closing and locking the doors won't have been against the rules... though still morally unnacceptable...

At least some did get out, it still could have been worse. (But it is rather bad already.)

okay, "criminally negligent homicide" sounds good.  There are various kinds of murder and that one seems to be the most accurate.

As for why more didn't jump, it sounds like it was a 4 story building (ground floor and three upper floors).  For some of them, the fall could have killed them.  People can survive a drop like that but it helps to know the 5-point parachutist's landing and I doubt any of them had that kind of training.
