ATENTION: play is now taking place in this private topic (will be open only to current and past players). Use this thread only for public non-play discussion.

Yes, that chess. There have been instances of two people playing chess at long distance via mail (snail mail even, not e-mail!), so I see no reason why two people couldn't play chess via a forum. I'm not going to go into the rules of chess here, since most people are familiar with them (and if you're not- Wikipedia is your friend), I'm just going to get going. Here's the board:

chessboardzl6.png

This is, of course, just a two player game. Someone is going to play me. Who? Well, first come, first serve! Still, due to the difference of this situation, let's lay out some ground rules:

-state the move you wish to make simply but clearly (e.g., "Knight on B1 to C3", "Castle to king's left", etc.), so that people who aren't experts on things can follow. Also, be sure to say "check" or "checkmate" if applicable.

-I'll update the board each time I move to keep it easy to see how things stand. You don't edit it, just say your move.

-since RLS is a potential issue, any failure by either player to make a move for a period of more than seven days will result in an automatic forfeit.

-once the first game ends, the winner gets to play whoever shows up next (unless they don't want to- then we can get two new players). Once it comes to the point where I'm not playing, then the players may update the board as often as they see fit. Just be sure to keep things straight. If I see something done wrong, I'll correct it.

-chess can be a spectator sport, but it is a silent spectator sport. No suggestions or hints from the audience. In other words- no posting here if you're not playing unless you've got something really important to say.

-since I am the challenger, you're white and I'm black. Your move!

    Pawn on D7 to D6:

    chessboard1zv1.png

    Your statement worked because there was only one knight you could move to F3. However, that might not always be the case, which would leave that command ambiguous. That should have been said as "Knight on G1 to F3", okay? Right. Go.

    This game is a little awkward in a forum like ST, eh? A game in which only two people can play seems like it doesn't fit well with the rest of the forum games. Those are all open to every member, whereas this one is closed. Can't you just play chess online or through some other means of communication?

    -Also, every post here increases your post counter. If this section of the forum didn't increase your post count, then I wouldn't mind.

    -Every move, or post, will also bump this thread to the top as well. Can't you send a PM to eachother or something?

    For those reasons, I feel that there is no such reason for a game like this here on ST. It would be like playing solitaire here: just you, posting every time you move a card. Its pointless when you can just play the actual game or a computer game (like chess)

    No offense Duke/wir3d, but increasing your post count for no reason and constantly bumping threads just steers me away from games like this.

    Best,

    -Haljackey

    Okay, what on earth was the double post for?47.gif

    In any case, you do make a good point- this is rather awkward. So, in light of that, I think I'll go start a private topic for the actual playing, whereas this thread will remain only for non-play discussion such as new players being selected once a game ends, etc. Probably would work better that way.

    If not for the limitations of forum chess, I would be in. I would very much like to play against you, Duke! You would probably mop the floor with me, but that's never stopped me from enjoying the game.

    Good to know that the true classics never die.

    Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

    Hey, you can get the next game if you want.

    Would you like access to the play thread? Then you can observe this game.

    I'll look in, but I haven't got the concentration to play as a forum game. I need a board in front of me to play well. If someone invents an IM version, I'll get in on that.

    Looks good. Nice job on that. Okay, I'll give a try. A caveat, I haven't played in several years so I am a bit rusty.

    Okay, the game between me and manticorefan is officially over. I won. This is the "box score":

    Pn=Pawn   Rk=Rook   Bi=Bishop   Kn=Knight   Qn=Queen   Kg=King

    -=move   x=capture   !=check   #=checkmate   $=stalemate   FF=forfeit

    CKS=castle king side     CQS=castle queen side      ep=en passant

    >=pawn promotion

    EDIT: post got truncated and the clipped table was messing up the page. Here's the box score in a less polished presentation:

    White                      Black

    Pn c2-c3            Pn e7-e5

    Pn f2-f3                Kn g8-f6

    Pn h2-h3            Kn f6-h5

    Kg e1-f2            Bi f8-c5 !

    Pn e2-e3            Qn d8-h4 !

    Kg f2-e2            Kn h5-g3 !

    Kg e2-d3            Pn e5-e4 !

    Kg d3-c2            Kn g3 x Rk h1

    Qn d1-e2            CKS

    Qn e2-c4            Pn d7-d6

    Pn b2-b4            Bi c5-b6

    Pn f3 x Pn e4            Kn h1-g3

    Kn g1-f3            Qn h4 x Pn e4 !

    Pn d2-d3            Qn e4-g6

    Kn f3-h4            Qn g6-f6

    Kn b1-d2            Kn g3 x Bi f1

    Kn d2-e4            Qn f6 x Kn h4

    Kn e4-d2            Kn f1 x Pn e3 !

    Kg c2-b3            Kn e3 x Qn c4

    Kn d2 x Kn c4            Bi c8-e6

    Bi c1-a3            Qn h4-g3

    Rk a1-e1            Qn g3 x Rk e1

    FF

    After this there was just a message saying "feel free to discuss the game" and a request for a new opponent.

    Very well. You're in.

    The playing thread is linked to up top of the initial post for this thread, or the specific post where the new game starts is here.

    Well, that was fast. Hahayoudied goes down in five moves. Here's how:

    Pn=Pawn   Rk=Rook   Bi=Bishop   Kn=Knight   Qn=Queen   Kg=King

    -=move   x=capture   !=check   #=checkmate   $=stalemate   FF=forfeit

    CKS=castle king side     CQS=castle queen side      ep=en passant

    >=pawn promotion

    Move White Black
    1 Pn h2-h4 Pn e7-e5
    2 Pn b2-b4 Bi f8 x Pn b4
    3 Pn a2-a3 Bi b4-c5
    4 Bi c1-b2 Qn d8-f6
    5 Pn g2-g3 Bi c5 x Pn f2 #

    So, now I need another opponent. Who wants to give it a shot?
