SC4 Mapper Issues

Good Morning,

I'm trying to install the region for mrbisonm's region play game and to do so I have to use SC4Mapper. The problem is that I can't seem to get it installed correctly. I have downloaded it from three different locations, the latest edition being from sc4devotion, and have had the same problem all of them. When I try to open it I get the splash screen and after a few seconds it goes away, but the program never opens. It doesn't show that it's open on the task manager or anything either. After each time it creates a text document containing:

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 1007, in OnClose

File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 1010, in ShowMain

File "SC4MapApp.pyo", line 277, in __init__

UnicodeDecodeError: 'unicodeescape' codec can't decode bytes in position 2-4: truncated \UXXXXXXXX escapequote>

I have all but exhausted my search options and have found a few posts with similar problems but never a definitive answer.

Your help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

Have you tried SC4TerraFormer? If all you are trying to do is get the GRV region up and running, you can load .sc4m files with that program too. I would give it a shot if I were you.

I thought you needed a gray scale file for that? Perhaps, I'm wrong. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

You do not need a greyscale for SC4Terraformer. I am not talking about the in game terraforming tools. It is a program by wouanagaine and is available on SC4Devotion at:

    https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=731

If you need the quick and dirt instructions on how to load a .sc4m region using that program, you can click on my signature link to my maps. Any of them have a quick step-by-step instruction for getting 16 bit regions into SC4 with both the SC4Mapper and SC4TerraFormer.

    Hope that all helps.

Posting here since I'm having an odd problem with SC4Mapper on mrbisons region play map as well. Except I got it to render in SC4Mapper, but whenever I try to load the cities with anything in the Plugins folder the game crashes. I went in with an empty plugins folder to get the basic look, reasoning that once saved by the game the cities should be fine. But when I add nothing but the snow capped terrain mod and PEG water the game crashes again. I can load cities from other maps fine though.

And I've tried to use SC4Terraformer but it refuses to work for me even though I have the correct version of DirectX. I'm running Win2k with SC Deluxe and the patch. Am I just out of luck?

EDIT: Found the problem. Apparently the artic snow capped textures were the problem. And only on maps with a higher elevation.

I've searched and can't seem to find an answer, so here's my problem: I downloaded a map (Republika Towalsu), loaded it up in SC4 Mapper, opened the game, everything looks good. Except the city layouts are all screwed up. They don't match the layout in the readme either, so I made a new config.bmp file with the layout I like, reload everything, and the game opens up to an empty purple-checkered universe. So how do I change the config file? Is the layout of the cities embedded in the .SC4M file? I'm running everything on a MacBook using Bootcamp. I don't have Terraformer. I'm using SC4 Deluxe. Not sure what else to add...

    Hi, DocWriight.

First of all, thank you for downloading and using my map, Republika Tawalsu.

From your description of the "purple-checkered universe", it sounds like you're using SC4Mapper, version 2.0.  What you're seeing is the "contours" feature of the application.  Once you get some terrain in the map, the purple contour lines will be displaced with the regular terrain colors and the contour lines will show as just that -- contour lines.  They cannot be turned off / on in SC4Mapper like they can in SC4Terraformer.  In SC4Terraformer, you can toggle the contour lines on and off using the "G" key.

I've just finished downloading and verifying that the config.bmp file in the zip archive is the correct one when using SC4Terraformer.  I also just finished importing the map into SC4Terraformer and successfully opened the map.

As for SC4Mapper, I was able to recreate your problem.  Here's how I recreated the problem.:

    1)  Launched SC4Mapper, clicked on Load Region

    2)  Navigated to where I stored the config.bmp and .SC4M files and clicked the OK button.

    3)  This opened the correct city configuration as shown by the config.bmp file.

    4)  Clicked on the Create Region button.

    5)  From the "Do you want to create a region from?: box, I clicked on the SC4M button.

    6)  Navigated to where the .SC4M file is stored, selected the .SC4M file and cliced on the Open button.

    7)  The region appeared but with a completely different city configuration.

Interestingly enough, the city configuration shown is one of my EARLIER config.bmp configurations.  I can only assume it was stored in the .SC4M file and that SC4Mapper "pulled" it out instead of the correct configuration?

You have two solutions to this problem (as I am not able to "fix" the issue you reported not being the author of the application).  You can either use SC4Terraformer to open the map or you can use the zip file I've attached to this message.

The zip file contains three files:

    Republika_Tawalsu.SC4M

    Republika_Tawalsu.png

    config.bmp

The .SC4M file was exported from SC4Terraformer and verified to open correctly in SC4Mapper.

The .PNG file was exported from SC4Terraformer and verified to open correctly in SC4mapper.

The config.bmp file is the correct city configuration for the map.

I hope this will help get you up and running with Republika Tawalsu.

    Good luck.

    Regards,

    Gary (Vandy)

Thanks for your help, I just installed Terraformer and customized the config.bmp how I wanted it. It works perfectly now so I'm going to get started on a new CJ 4.gif
