When you say the program won't run, just what happens?  Do you get the spash screen with the Bridge on it?

In SC4, the play disk (Disk 2) must be in a CD drive.  If this is not the case, the program will not go past the splash screen, but will say that it cannot find the disk.

Please give more detail on what happens exactly.

What operating system are you running for all of this?  Vista probably cannot run this game in under 1GB.  XP will start it and run slowly, but is just fine in 1GB.

Make sure you have lots of virtual memory.  This game eats memory and processor.  On the machines you described, your CPU's should have gone to 100 percent if the game started at all.  You will need something on the order of 2 or 3 GB of virtual to run the game correctly.

Hope this gets you started on a diagnosis, and we look forward to your next post.

it's the Geforce 8600 GT that's causing the problem. I had no problem with SC4 before I bought the Geforce 8600 GT. After I installed the card, SC4 wouldn't open. I'm guessing a driver update might help...I don't know what else?

With a later graphics card like that, make sure that all the options for it are set to application selected.

To test your problem, start from the shortcut after adding the option -d:software

after the last quote mark.  Remember options are like words and need to be separated from each other by a space.

This will cut out most of your graphics card, and cause the system to use the processor to do the graphics processing.  If it works, the problem is in the graphics system.
