For some reason SimCity 4 has trouble with hardware accelerated sound.  So, before you start up SimCity do this:  Start---->Run--->dxdiag---->Sound Tab---->Reduce Sound Hardware Accel. to "No Accel." then exit.  Start up SC4.

Oh, and if you reboot, you'll need to go back into dxdiag and turn off sound hardware acceleration again before starting SC4.  Reboots automatically turn acceleration back on.  Of course, you can always go back to dxdiag and turn sound hardware acceleration back on for your other games.

Let me know if it works for you.  I've tried this only in WinXP, so I'm not sure if it'll work in other OSes.  Ever since I changed my sound settings I haven't gotten any crashes or restarts.  Works like a charm!

Quite possible.  The only crashes I have had with this game are BSODs caused by the sound driver.  Interesting point.

hmmmmmmmmmmm i think it would only be because of your specific computers configurations that this would work in all situations. i used to do something like this for vice city on my old comp - would make it run real fast.....but there were sound glitches.
