Getting my city off the ground

Hello,

I'm kinda new to Simcity.  I've been playing it for a year or so but I really only cared about money and population and not the actual look of the city.  It was very typical for me to have homes right next to dirty industry.  My most successful city had a population of a few 100,000 with a Pro Baseball park, soccer stadium, airport, solar energy plant.  I even had a couple skyscrapers pop in once a while.

Yesterday I decided to start fresh and design a city in a region.  I tried making Industrial it's own city and connecting it a city of around 5,000 people but industrial demand never grew and my other city was losing money due to the educational system and water pumps.  I tried a couple guides(mainly the making money fast one in the Omnibus).  Whats the key to getting a city off the ground successfully?

Maybe you have too many R$$ and R$$$ and not enough jobs for them. I usually put taxes to around 12 -12.5 % on R$$$ and a little bit lower on R$$.
