Hopefully this is the right place to ask this, please forgive me if it is not.

Anyway, I've had sim city 4 for about two years now, and I love playing it.  The problem is that I usually install it, then a week later delete it from my computer.  I seem to never be able to build a good or large city.  The problem I have every time is I usually get to a point where people seem to no be able to find work.  It seems it starts with a small area, then those houses become abandon, and it moves on to other houses.  Its like a plague that infects all of my cities that I build.  I've also built places for these people to work right next door sometimes, and even still no one works there.  Which both the house and work place are the same wealth, so its not like I'm trying to get a $$ weath family to work on a farm.  In the current city I have no $$$ wealth families, which I also have two connecting cities that I have built up for jobs, but even still many people seem to not have jobs.  I have both high tech and dirty industry in my city for people, and a fairly large bus system that works pretty good.  I just dont get what I'm doing wrong

Sooo, I just want to know if there is something that I'm doing wrong, or if this is normal and if everyone goes through this?  Which if thats the case, do I just keep adding onto my city, even though that seems to make it worse?  Also, if anyone knows of any good tutorials on how to build a large sucessful city could they please post them.  Thanks

There are mods around that multiply the amount of jobs provided by buildings, ie. you can make pumpkin acreas take 100 jobs.

Spend some time in the Omnibus and you will find neat stuff there.

The clue to keeping people in your city is Jobs!  Jobs!!  Jobs!!!

If you provide enough industry and commercial space everything will be cool.  Try running at a slower pace so you are not rushed on decisions.  If you have to stop and think for a few minutes, put it in pause.

You have to provide amenities at some levels.  initially, farms and single R and C don't require water, just power.  As population grows, and you start education, if you supply water you get better houses, and higher demands.  Things grow apace.

Well I downloaded some stuff and added a few more streets and that seemed to clear up the problem. But now I have another question, when would be a good time to start upgrading my city to medium and high density? Is there a certain population you should reach first, and is there a certain way to go about it?

Build out before you build up.  If your population is getting much above 40,000 you might consider some medium or high density commercial lots.
