I have been playing simcity for about a month now and i realized that most industries turn high tech when the city grows really well. It seems like there is no need for other kinds of industries in the city, so I'm just wondering whether farms are worth building at all when the city is big.

    Nope.

Problem with farms is this: When other businesses are successful, farms stagnate. This means with each rise of demand in commerce/non-agri industry, agri-industry loses demand.

Plus, farms take up stupid amounts of real estate. I only use them at the start of a city or for eye candy.

MayorCain hit the nail on the head, farms are only useful as eye candy, they serve no good purpose in the game.

I didn't really get into farming communties until late last year. I have been playing sc4 since early 2004. Its possible to make come really beautiful and detailed farming cities with all the neat costum content that is available. Plus since farm workers do not need education you can save a bundle of money on civic services. You can build big dairy farm areas with related industry business that need educated sims from neighbooring cities to come in and work at. You can build and outrageous railroad system with stock yards and freight yards. You can do entire areas of just flower farms. Its endless. Start looking at the different CJ's here at simtropolis and start getting ideas, maybe a year from now you will be ready to go nuts with farms.

Yes - farms are the first step in growing a city. Uneducated sims work there. However, once they get education, they prefer to work elsewhere (higher paying jobs, etc..)

It's very telling that later in the game, with a mature city, even with high demand for farm I, farms don't develop!!
