Crash!

I've seen numerous threads about this problem, and every single one doesn't ever seem to be fixed. I've posted on those threads, only to not be helped in any way, I've tried everything anyones suggested and nothing is helping me or anyone else that seems to be experiencing the same problem, so I'm gonna try one more time......

I got a new computer this year (Sony Vaio Laptop) and I installed SC4 almost immediately. At first, everything was working fine. After about two weeks of playing the game, it bagan to crash. The crashing started folowing changing patterns. First, it crashed in the middle of gameplay, then it crashed upon loading a certain city, possibly based on population. Then it began to crash upon loading the game, right at the EA logo! After I was able to get passed that, it started crashing in the most frustrating and annoying way, right when I had made a significant amount of progress in a city without being able to save.

As I said, I've tried almost everything, I set the graphics options to minimum, medium, and I've changed to to software instead of hardware, I've messed with my computer's virtual memory to maximum 4069 or something like that, whatever the person suggested. So can ANYONE help me? Everyone that's had this problem only reached a dead end because no one was able to help them. If someone could help me with this, I'd really appreciate it.

I can only think you may have a "lemon" of a computer. If you have done everything like you say you have. then I guess it's a no brainer. Have you downloaded certain STEx stuff?. Did you close your anti-virus programs? Did you If you say everything. might help if you list exactely what you have done. You might be missing something. but i see that youy have been a member since 2003.....If this is a new problem and you have tried everything...Like I said....maybe something with the computer. Like if youy downloaded IE 7. lots of crashes witht hat. Just trying to help ya fish around...maybe something I say here might help. who knows. Hope you find out. Good luck to you.

Ya, I've downloaded a lot from STEX, and I've even encountered a few problems with some of the lots, which is why I ended up deleting those files. I've tried ALMOST everything, at least everything that people have suggested about this particular problem. I think that this problem may very well be related to something I may have downloaded, since this problem didn't really happen until I started downloading a lot of stuff. What is IE 7? It's possible I may have downloaded it, but again, I've downloaded a lot. I'll look in my plugins folder and check, but I'm not sure. This is a new problem. And no I haven't closed any anti-virus programs, I have strong anti-virus programs, and I scan for problems all the time, always coming up with nothing.

I don't think Internet Explorer has anything to do with this problem.

the first thging u should do is a renstall if that does nt work....

u should try to do a system restore to when u first got the computer aka before two weeks after u got it .. also, when and if u do a restore look on the bold dates the day of or after the crashes began and it should tell u what u installed, as that program may be the problem. BTW dont worry about losing files... youre cpu wont delete them

CPU = computer for the acronym impared ....

    IE 7? Duh?

    jks yo

Do you have a dual-core CPU? If so, the go to the simcity 4.exe process and right click it. Then go to "Affinity" and you'll see CPU 0 and CPU 1 both checked. Uncheck one of those and then see how it goes.

Thanx for trying to help everybody, but nothing seems to be working, I'll keep on trying this stuff, but I don't think this problem's gonna be fixed anytime in the near future.

Have you tried going to SC4Devotion and checking out the new datpacker program? I had these problems, but not after using the datpacker. Crashes happen for many reasons, but a major one is the plugin folder. This compacts everything into one dat file that the computer can read very easily. Try it out!

We are all plunging around in the dark.  Rather than look up your machine on the net, which may or may not work, please look at the bug reporting sticky above and tell us your machine specifications.  We can't even begin to guess what is wrong until we see what platform you are running.

It is common for laptops to overheat when running this game.  It runs the cpu at 100%, and this in a close-quartered case can be fatal to your CPU.

I can't give you exact specifications, I'm not a huge computer person like you guys, that's why I said, "I have a new Sony Vaio," that's about as specific as I can get, I'll look for all the ***** that came with my computer and see if that says anything about my computer's information, but who the hell knows where I put all of that. I'm going to try the datpacker, and if that doesn't work, I'll do my best to look for and provide you with specifications......

    Thanx to gshmails, the datpacker really seems to be working, I really think that it did the trick! I don't want to speak too soon though, I'll give it a liitle bit more time, but I really think that it's working. The only thing is that I'm going to have to go through the process everytime I download something, which is quite in convenient, and it seems to leave some files behind, creating those big ass ugly brown "Sim City" boxes, but that problem can be fixed. Thanx to you all for trying to help out, the datpacker seems to be the remedy. (;

I take that back, the datpacker helps, but doesn't completely fix the crashing problem. After about 2 1/2 - 3 hours of gameplay, it crashes, which is definately an improvement, but nevertheless, a nuisance. I think I could probably just live with it, but again, needless to say it's just such an inconvenience, especially when you've made a lot of progress after a long period of time without having the chance to save the progress.

Anyways, thanx for trying to help everyone, I appreciate it.

You can get your system specifications by entering dxdiag in the run box and pressing enter.  This runs the DirectX Diagnostic program.

You can also get it from Start->Accessories->System Tools->System Information.

You wouldn't own a refrigerator without knowing where the freezer was would you, or the water filter?  You should always find out about anything you buy.  If you ask the computer what it has, it will tell you.  You just have to know how to ask.
