Me, I use the demand bar as another way of saying "We want taxes". That way you can increase taxes on R$ if there is a 6000 demand and not worry about your city not growing.

Anyways, it can be a bummer if you put your taxes above 11%. 2.gif

Well, Simcity isn't working for me right now. But I do remember that it's below 9% for the residentials and commercial (I don't spend much really). However the industraial tax rates are above 10% (40,000 industrial jobs the last time i checked) 8-)

Lower the taxes. You will get more demand, desirability, and therefore, your low taxes will pay off even more than the high taxes.

I always set the taxes for my CO$$ and CO$$$ pretty low once the city starts getting fairly large (over 80k). In my biggest city I think CO$$ is set to 3.0%, and CO$$$ is set to 1.0%. >>; Doesn't put THAT big of a hamper on your budget too, as CS gives LOTS of money via taxes.

A very warm welcome to Simtropolis, Annomalay! Everyone has a different way of setting taxes depending on their playing style and what they want their city to be. For example, I set my taxes totally different than Leishtek. Not that there's anything wrong with the way Leishtek sets taxes...hey that's what works for Leishtek so that's how it should be for that playing style and mayoring method. When I set my taxes, I set them to R$: 8.0%, R$$: 8.5%, R$$$: 9.0% or a slight variation thereof. I structure the commercial pretty much the same way. I almost never readjust my residential taxes once I set them at the start except maybe for a minor tweak early in the city's stages. I may do some adjusting of the commercial depending on how things are progressing as the city progresses, but again, it's usually a very minor tweak. One thing I do and I've noticed a lot of others do this as well...I do NOT set my taxes for the purpose of making money! I use taxes to set what I want to develop and how I want to shape my city. For example, if I see my city growing and getting a richer and better educated populatin, I may raise I-D taxes to 20% so no more polluting industry will develop. Doing this paves the way for I-HT to come in and start setting up shop since HT hates pollution. If I'm playing a region and I want a ghetto for city#1 and a rich bedroom community for city#2, I'll do something like this: City #1: R$ 8.0%, R$$: 10%, R$$$: 20%. City#2: R$:20%, R$$: 9.5%, R$$$: 8.0%. You get the idea. This way, City #1 will attract mostly R$ with some R$$ and City #2 will attract R$$$ with some R$$ and no R$. If you're playing a region nd want everything to develop pretty much equally, just be sure that your taxes are consistant with the other cities or the simps will flee in droves to the city with the lower taxes for that wealth level. Experiment to see what works best for you. There's no real right or wrong way to do it. Ask 50 different people you'll get 50 different answers. It depends totally on what YOU want to do and are trying to achieve. Good luck!

    Hi Annomalay, and welcome.

DOXXP29 has given you a good answer to how you can influence the growth of your city, according to what you want to develop.

However, since you mention that you are having trouble getting your city to grow, let me explain about neutral demand taxes. For a city with less than 150,000 inhabitants, your taxes can be set to as high as 9.0% withouth affecting the demand for R$, R$$ & R$$$. This neutral demand tax rate drops to 8.9 for populations between 150,000 and 450,000, 8.8% up to 600,000 and so on until it is at 8.0% for a population as big as 2,100,000. If you raise your taxes above neutral demand, the city's demand will suffer (at a steep rate).   [Edit: I've given a much longer explanation before somewhere; just search my name and taxes or demand or something and it should come up]

You may want to check that you have not reached a demand cap as well.

Interesting, Iamthouth! I didn't know that. Have to check that out and see if I can apply it to any of my cities. What's curious, though, is that it's exactly the opposite of how real life cities operate. Of course, there's a lot of that in SC4.
