I am new to the site so please forgive me if I seem like a newbie. Anyhow my question is, is it normal for residences to report long commutes when they live like 3 or 4 blocks from the industrial or commercial zone where they work. It doesn't happen always but way too much. I was wondering if maybe there was a glitch in the game or if I was doing something wrong with how I built the city. Thanks in advance.

long commute can also mean it takes a long time due to traffic or transit being overcrowded. thought its still close simcity is still sort of weird like that but whatever.

there is a thing called the NAM or Network Addon Mod if you dont have it get it, on top of things like individual road/avenue overpass pieces and light rail and new interchanges it has stuff that will let you sort of in a way tweak stats like commute times and that could fix some issues

    get it here

From my own experience, Ive found there to be two factors that affect commute time: traffic and speed. Traffic is the more obvious one, in that a congested road makes the commute time jump in that area. The later is more subtle, but much more important to lower commute times. Even if you have zero congestion in your city, traveling by car is relatively slow. Though walking to a transit stop is even slower, spending 5 minutes on a monorail and getting across town makes all the difference.

If you have lots of traffic in areas (which probably isnt your problem), find out where the traffic is coming from and going to, and set up a bus network. Also, use one way roads or central avenues strategically. Though expensive to build and maintain, a well planned monorail can cut commute time down to half (in cities where I use one, the majority of my buildings have medium commute time, and my average commute is about 20-30 minutes)

Your not alone this is the biggest bane in Simcity, you build a fancy rail and subway network, upgrade roads to avenues and for 10 mins you get short commute before long commute comes back. The NAM is a must and makes more realistic cities.

When sims travel between city tiles it adds a lot to commute time, and also a lack of jobs for the specific wealth class can lead to "abandoned due to long commute times"...The NAM can help a lot!! Good luck and Welcome to ST!!
