Well, Gmax is free. The bad thing is that you can't save something as .3dmax, the good thing is that it is used to make BATs.

Well, that's not completely true, I make my automata with gmax and I export them to .3ds, It's simple, and I posted a tutorial about it which is in Vester's google notes
