Weird Graphics/Rendering Problem

Hey,

I have played SC4 for many years now but only recently the problem below has started happening.

untitled1ed.jpg

My computer is:-

AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.7GHz)

512mb RAM

GEForce4 graphics card (above image on hardware rendering mode)

In software rendering, the repeated image only appears outside city boundaries and occasionally inside.

When g is pressed it fixes the problem but i happens every time I move the frame so it becomes very annoying.

Help would be much appreciated.

i think your card might be giving up on you. this usually results due to the card being unable to draw for whatever reason. since pressing G (thus inducing a forced redraw) seems to work, it suggests otherwise.

have you made any recent changes to your hardware (such as overclocking or new drivers)?

This looks like a scrolling problem, but could be a symptom of insufficient paging space.

With 512MB I recommend your Virtual memory setting should be (initial, maxium) = (1536,2048)

My virtual memory was already at 1500,3000 and changing it to 1536,2048 didn't stop it happening.

I am starting to agree it could be graphcis card death symptoms.  Do you have any problems with other high-graphics games?

Please run DXDIAG from your run box, and see if there are any errors on the pages.

The registry information for the service provider 'DirectPlay8 TCP/IP Service Provider' is missing or damaged.

The registry information for the service provider 'DirectPlay8 IPX Service Provider' is missing or damaged.

The registry information for the service provider 'DirectPlay8 Modem Service Provider' is missing or damaged.

The registry information for the service provider 'DirectPlay8 Serial Service Provider' is missing or damaged.

All those entries are part of the graphics service for the internet.  I think you should do a reinstall on your networking software.  You might get by with a run of the system file checker.  Run SFC from your run box.  (this assumes you have XP).  If it won't run, you should get hold of your local computer geek and ask for help.

This is a little trickier.  You will need to do a two phase operation.

    1. Delete your existing networking stuff from Windows.
      1. Open your control panel and choose add/remove programs
      2. On this panel, chose Add/Remove Windows components
      3. On the Windows Components Wizard scroll down to Networking services
      4. Uncheck this box.  It should be cleared.
      5. Click on Next.  You may need your O/S disk at this point.
      6. Follow the instructions and close out this phase.
    2. Boot your machine
    3. Repeat all the steps in part 1 except instead of unchecking the box, check it.  This will reinstall your operating system networking components as you follow the wizard to completion.
    4. Boot again.
    5. Run DXDIAG again, to make sure things are back.  If not, run Windows Update.
