infrastructure question-railway

as a newbie I have a question in regards to laying railway lines. I am currently laying the infrastructure of my city. I have laid the highways and avenues that connects all of the cities together. However, I always dont know how and when it is best to lay the lay railway lines that can make the most of the transportation. Also where do I lay it? Next to a road structure in the center of the city? how do I lay the lines so it wont affect the road infrastructure? Anybody has any pics to share?

Hi,

You could try making the rails cross the roads, although there is a way to do it without level crossings. If you make absolutely no road connections, but the rails between the residential areas and the Industry/Commerce areas, then the Sims will have to use the rails to get to work.

Don't forget to place stations next to them.
