well best place to start is Greyveil;s up and running tutorial...this will get your game ready to use the STEX properly

    https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=110&threadid=58510&enterthread=y

I suggests skipping all transit option and getting the NAM:

I personelly use the MAC version...it's allows you to control what options you caan install in your game...and works with PC version (it's the same thing without the auto installer)

grab the SC4Tool program, it's an outside program that allows you to scan custom content, get the true stats, and also scans for dependancies and 95% of the time will tell you if they are already installed in your game..it  allows you to edit them if you so desire, to your playing style. It also contains a building data base of all the original Maxis buildings...a way kewl program and must if you wanbt to use the STEX properly

after that , the key is just to go slow with the plugins...ACTUALLY READ THE READM FILES... these are the instructions from the maker on how to install the lot/bat/mod in your game correctly...and will contain a list of dependancies (other files you may have to download seperately to make the bat/lot/mod function correctly

test new bats/lots/mods in a sandbox region before using in your favorite region to aviod possible conflicts...yea it sometimes happens as all the stuff on the STEX is amature made plugins (even though most kick the snot out of the original Maxis stuff)

keep your plugins folder orginized...so your able to find newly added plugins you may have trouble with...hard to fix a problem if you can't find it

a popular way of doing this is having sub folders in the game...orginizing the plugins by lotmaker/type/individual download...eg simgoobers toysRus lot might look like

    mydocuments\simcity4\plugins\simgoober\comersialsrervice\toysRus

this is only a suggestion...any filing system that you can understand and find things quickly can be used...as the game will  scan any subfolders in the My documents/simcity4\plugins folder

personel favorites of mine for lot makers are NDEX, Simgoober and the rest of the BSC

but theres always special gems. try and stick to ones you like the look of...and will actuall use in your game

hope that not too long winded...:S...and welcome to ST...4.gif
