Manage region tiles as cities or as districts?

I'm playing with SC4 for 1 year, but I still think about myself as a beginner, so I think I ask you a question: I wondered, that what's the better: manage the region tiles like individual city tiles or like a district in a large city? I use the tiles like city places and connect the individual cities with roads and mass transit. Is it a better startegy to manage the tiles as districts or it's good to manage like individual cities?

Pro/con?

Welcome to ST!

I don't know if any of those are better then the other. When I started playing the game I played just like you do now, but since I started to visit ST I saw that many other member played the other way. I tested and I've been doing like that since then... You'll get more closer to the reality and of course bigger cities. It's also a bit more challenging, you'll have to make the cities work together. For example you can place one city with industry next to another with just residentals, then the sims will live in one town and work in another. I'm sure there's topics about this around here somewhere which explains better. I'm a lazy Swede with bad english I'm afraid. Good luck with your future cities/regions!

I say in your main city area, manage them as districts, but manage suburbs and surrounding towns as indiviual cities.

The only con to specialized districts is that you may not meet the requirements for rewards that require a certain population of residents AND commercial.

Single use cities actually aren't very realistic and they tend to look ugly as you end up with these artificial lines down the map. Building mixed cities makes much more sense.

Everything looks a lot more realistic when you mix the cities together. If you're trying to say that the region is like a country, county, state etc. Then you can make them as individual cities, but if you have a region that you're trying to make into a large city, just mix the cities. I used to play individual but sometimes, mixed is better.

Well, thanks for the tips. I'm doing it in progress. I just started a city witch covers two tiles. Oh, and the tips were very useful, thanks again!

I usually do one city per tile. Maybe if I have a big city, it would extend one tiel and maybe next to it it can be "North City" or soemthing. Also making suburb towns around your single tile city makes it more realistic.

I've yet to get into huge population regions, but I really like using the largest maps for mixed cities. My mid-sized maps end up being whatever I'm in the mood for when I create them. Some are mainly farming communities with a little industry and commercial thrown in, while others end up being playgrounds for rich snobs. I use the smallest maps mainly for garbage and farming. They're just too small for me to bother developing otherwise. I tried making one into a suburb once, but the commute time drove me nuts, so I never did that again.

When I think about the whole map, I often see it as something like my own area where there's one fairly large city with several small ones around it, then vast miles of farmland surrounding those. Almost every place I've ever been is pretty much the same and I think my regions reflect that type of development.
