Hitachi discovered a way to vastly increase the amount of data that can be stored on a HD, and made this little cartoon about it.

everyone oughta watch this. its funny, and it also explains how a hard drive stores data. so its informative as well.

Ok, honestly, who in their right mind would need 30,000 songs in the palm of their hand?! 46.gif

My itty bitty 1GB player is more than enough for me.  But I don't want music constantly pounding through my head 24/7 like the rest of my college colleagues.

I am definately going to invest in the hearing aid industry when I'm making the big bucks. 19.gif

    i was thinking the same thing lol....

    of course this technology will be used in much much more than dinky HD's for MP3 players. If a teensy microdrive with perpendicular arranged bits can hold 30,000 songs worth of data, imagine how much a full sized HD could hold of any sort of data

    One must ask the question though.

    Just becuase they are upright how does that prevent the Superpara magentic effect?

    The bits are packed even tighter together would not that make the effect worse?

    Guys, guys, this is not about storing songs.  Think about having a server with 10 to 100x the current density for the database in the same space.  Think about how small a HD could be and still store, say, 1024GB (1 Terabyte, abbreviated TB which does not stand for two beauts).

    It's not about having tons more songs on there than you can possibly listen to in one sitting, it's about having selection, so you can choose to listen to whatever whenever as opposed to having to choose from the collection you were able to fit on there.

    To show what this technology can do, (I believe) Seagate is comming out with a 750gb hard drive soon, and PC world believes that 2TB drives could be on the way soon.

    Actually, Hitachi will be packing the bits in tighter (the orientation allows them to pack them closer before they suffer the same effect that the same bits would suffer if packed horizontally.

    Thats what i meant, eventually they will start packing them closer/making them smaller ect to increase the storage sizes so they will  have this problem again, proabaly within a  few years.

    I wonder if  RAM is horizontal or Perpendicular bits? when its stored.

    I'm not entirely sure how this would work in the real world, but for theoretical purposes, let's just assume that one of these bits takes up only half of the space in a vertical position as it does in a horizontal position.  By flipping them up, that would allow you to make the platters only half of the size they were originally.  Everything (well, roughly everything) would be only half the size it currently is now.  So, that would make it easier to pack the same quantity of data in an even smaller space.  Pretty soon, HDs would get to be so small that you could swallow them by accident  OK, that's going to be a few years off, but you get the drift.

    A couple of things were mentioned in this thread:

    Optical Storage

    Essentially, write once read many (WORM) technology.  Lasers actually burn (destroy) the recoring media.  RW CD and DVD media is still magnetic, just laser guided for close packing.

    Random Access Memory (main computer memory)

    The chips these days are not static.  They are electronic delay lines and are continually refreshed.  They circulate until they are read out (then renewed in the read(/write) cycle.  If they were permanent (flash or writeable semiconductor) you wouldn't lose them on power off.  The trade-off in this techology is speed.
