Thing GMAX doesnt like

This is something that has happened to me twice, and i was wondering if anyone else has dealt with it. Its also a good warning for others using BAT...

anyways, Ive noticed that if you have a lot of crap in your system tray and your computer can take a little while to get started, if you open gmax while your system is bogged down loading all the startup programs, gmax will not have enough memory or something like that, and certian plugins wont load. Eventually it will start up, but the BAT plugins wont work. Even worse, any BAT project you open up when it is in this state will be corrupted and un-openable when you try to retrieve it.

Just FYI

This is quite possible, if you have a lot of programs running at the same time (and all these "startup" programs stay resident and do require memory). Fortunately, this is easy to cope with, just increase the initial & max size for your swap (page) file. The memory that is usable by the OS is not the physical memory, it's the virtual memory (physical + pagefile). There is no any problem with this, just some space on your hard-disk will be pre-reserved. There is no performance loss either (due to disk/mem swapping) - the startup programs that don't actually "run" (make CPU usage/memory references) will be transfered to the swapfile and stay there triggering no swapping. So exporing won't be slowed-down either. If you have a second (and faster) hard-disk, it is highly recommended that you configure your system to store the pagefile there. Defrgragmenting the disk (before doing so) can also help.

Even if you accomplished this, there can be times when an unfortunate accident can happen. A good thing to do is backup your files.

A very good point, Constantina.

Also, it is not good policy to try to do anything like load a major program while the system is still running its start up loads.  Go for coffee or something if you are that anxious during a boot.

I avoid the boot process (mine take about 10 minutes) by using Hibernate to shut down my machine.  This take a checkpoint of the machine and powers it off.  When you power up, the system quickly resumes from the checkpoint.

Well, I guess it happened to me, but I didn't know why it did it. Thanks for telling us. I suppose always backing up a file is indeed important.
