  1. New York State

Joey, thanks again for the comments! The map is, admittedly, not perfect... it's a lot harder to find accurate maps for templates for the outline of the state.

lilred731: I do have other maps to do first, but I will indeed look in to it after those are done. Berlin Germany has been uploaded to the STEX, and should be available shortly!

This is a map of Berlin, Germany. It is scaled accurately. It is 28 by 24 km. Instructions (very important note below): If you don't have my plugins pack, download it here. 1) Place the 250m.dat plugin in your plugins folder, and remove any other height mod plugins... thanks to Andy80586 and lookinin for helping me create the mods. 2) Create a new folder called Berlin Germany in your ...My Documents/SimCity 4/Regions directory. 3) Download the config.bmp file and place it in the new folder 4) Download the BerlinGermany250.jpg file and remember where you downloaded it to. 5) Run your SimCity 4 game 6) Open the Berlin Germany Region 7) On your keyboard, press and hold down 'ctrl' + 'alt' + 'shift' + 'r'--this should bring up a dialogue box 8) Browse to the folder that you downloaded BerlinGermany250.jpg to, find "BerlinGermany250.jpg", and open this file. 9) This should start the rendering. BE PATIENT. This will likely take between 15 and 45 minutes. 10) Have fun! Copyrights: I don't care about copyrights. You may use this however you want, as long as it is legal. If you want to give someone credit, just say Mallow The Cloud made the map. jrhnemo: I'm truly sorry. I had it completed, but I forgot to upload it to the STEX. I'll get right to that immediately. EDIT: New York State has been uploaded to the STEX, and should be available shortly!

The Columbus Terrain Mod can affect the importing of maps. What I would suggest is to take EVERYTHING out of your plugins folder (to a temporary folder), adding the 1000m.dat to your plugins folder, then rendering. Then after rendering, you can remove the 1000m.dat file and put back all your other plugins.

I had a request to crop Rome to just the center 5x5 large cities, so I'm attaching the zip of that version here.
  9. What is the best terrain mod for this situation?

Wow... well, minus all the hassles, I'm glad you finished the project! If you have any more questions about map making or rendering, feel free to ask. And if you think others might want to use your map, don't be afraid to upload it to the STEX.
  10. What is the best terrain mod for this situation?

LOL, no problem. Take your time. Good luck, let us know how it goes!
  11. What is the best terrain mod for this situation?

Hmmm... with some programs you can overlay one DEM file on top of another. If you can do that, you can have the one with the lower resolution on the bottom, and overlay it with the one with higher resolution. That way, you can fill in the missing data (even if it's not exactly perfect, it's pretty close).
  12. What is the best terrain mod for this situation?

I see... well, the size of the map shouldn't make a difference. Here's a good site for DEM data, but unfortunately it's in the form of .hgt files instead of .dem files. If you have a program that can use .hgt files, they should work great for you.
  13. What is the best terrain mod for this situation?

Ahh, sorry. They're plugins. Simply place the one you need in your plugins folder and render your map.
  14. What is the best terrain mod for this situation?

Indeed, some people have wanted the same thing. After much research, it turns out there is a way to do this. I have created a set of mods (based on the import.dat mod created by Andy80586) for just that purpose. It can be found here . They are named for the max height (in meters) above sea level. Here are some more stats on them: Height ASL ... ISF ... Sea Level 100m ... 1.3598 ... 183 250m ... 1.9485 ... 128 500m ... 2.9283 ... 86 1000m ... 4.8854 ... 52 1500m ... 6.8412 ... 37 2000m ... 8.7693 ... 29 2500m ... 10.7510 ... 24 3000m ... 12.7054 ... 20 3500m ... 14.6597 ... 18 4000m ... 16.6138 ... 16 4500m ... 18.5678 ... 14 5000m ... 20.5217 ... 13 Where Height ASL is the max height above Sea Level (in meters), corresponding to white... ISF is the Import Scale Factor, which you can think of as the change in height (in meters) per greyscale notch... and Sea Level is approximately the grey at which water appears. I hope this helps.
  15. The Seahawks Did It!

Date: 1/22/2006 10:41:53 PM Author: Voar Tok I'm glad that the Seahawks did win. Unfortunately, I don't feel that they will win the Super Bowl. BTW there is a thread on this. I don't meant to rain on your parade, but I have a feeling that this will get closed.quote> There is? It's not on the first page, at least. Since I'm in Seattle, I'm quite happy about this. Even though I'm not a big football fan, it's always nice to have a championship-quality sports team.

I see, delboysim. I guess I missed that. Blade, you are free.... nay encouraged to create a thread for your maps.
  19. The use of terrain modifications on maps

No problem. And just as an aside... I thought maybe you'd like to create a thread in the Mapping Community Board Room detailing all the maps you have done, just like some other mappers have done. You have quite the list of maps, so that's a good start.
  20. The use of terrain modifications on maps

delboysim: I understand completely. I really should make it more clear in my descriptions to take the mod out when uploading a new map, and maybe also why I am using the mod in the first place. Might that quell some confusion?
  21. The use of terrain modifications on maps

Date: 1/20/2006 1:01:31 PM Author: blade2k5 Another thing that dbs has mentioned several times is playing a normal map while the mod is installed. I've never removed the mod when playing a 'normal' built up region [one I terraformed when I first played the game], and have never had happen to me as what he describes happened to him. So, that either means that happens to some pcs and not others, or there is something seriously wrong with my pc, which wouldn't surprise me at all.quote> Nope, your computer is working just fine. The mods should NOT be causing that problem. They simply change import specifications (rendering maps), nothing more. If you load a map and something causes all your cities to be demolished, it is most likely NOT the terrain height mods. It is perfectly logical and a bit easier just to create maps with no mods. HOWEVER, for real terrains, if I need an elevation above 500 meters (which is not very high), I have no choice but to use a mod. I try to keep things as consistant as possible by using the 1000 meter mod as much as possible, so folks downloading my maps can usually just keep the 1000m.dat mod in their plugins folder when rendering most of my maps.

I'm glad you all like it! Thanks for all the great comments! Goldfish: I use a mod to make more accurate elevations. It's really not all that complicated. Just download the mod and put it in your plugins folder.
