  1. Help me master custom region making. : )

Date: 5/22/2005 2:28:21 PM Author: crookedasscop Oh and Mallow, why would you recommend irfanview and idraw as opposed to psp8? I am not proficient with any type of image editing software, so I'd rather buckle down and force myself to master one program than get confused trying to use many people's recommendations - A similar problem I have been unable to resolve when it comes to datagen vs. Reader. So I'm just curious why you like it more. Note that I have read your help topic a few threads down where you used Las Vegas as an example to help someone. It seems to differ from the tutorial I am following. But I could learn either way.quote> The reason I recommended the two programs I did is because they are free, and as far as I know psp8 is not... The Las-Vegas-example tutorial is just one of the many ways to make maps, but it is what I have done since I first started making maps... so I am used to it. If you would rather continue with the7trumpets' method, by all means, do! Date: 5/22/2005 2:28:21 PM Author: crookedasscop Alright my next question is this. When I am trying to set the sea level by using the min. max. z factor thing, that has you add your elevations to -314 and 619, I thought I read that I should select the lowest elevation point in the river to use for that calculation. But doesn't that make that point sea level, and therefore, any parts of the river that are above that lowest elevation won't show up as water in-game? It seems like I should choose the highest water elevation (for water that I want displayed, 'cause I know rivers way up in mountains just won't work, as high up as they are) that way, that river will be displayed, as well as the one at a lower elevation. Please correct any flaws in my thinking.quote> What you want to do is find the lowest elevation in the river and ADD it to the -314 and the 619. So, if the lowest point in the river is at 120 meters, then your z values will be -194 and 739 respectively. If the lowest portion is ocean, then it should be -314 and 619... Also, SC4 makes all water at the same level, so if you choose to use the river at the highest elevation then the rivers at the lower elevations will be WAY overflowed, and likely areas that should be flat plains will look like oceans... The z factor determines which part of it is underwater. Since SC4 uses 83 as sea level, the z factor must be calibrated to fit that, and that's what the7trumpets accomplishes here in this section.
  2. Help me master custom region making. : )

Date: 5/22/2005 1:32:26 AM Author: the7trumpets Next, we need to turn the grid on so that we have something to set the North/South and East/West scale to. Right click on the map and select Grid which will bring up the following dialog box: Make the window look like the one above. Ensure that Grid is set to UTM, and Label Grid has neither UTM or Lat/Long selected. Under UTM grid interval (m), enter either 1024, 2048, or 4096. These correspond to the widths of a small, medium, and large city, but this does not mean your cities must be that size, it will simply be used for measuring the scale. Click OK.quote> Hmm... well, if you followed these instructions, and still aren't getting the grid... I dunno what to tell you... As for image editing, I would recommend IrfanView to change the file from a tiff to a bmp file, and iDraw Character Maker to actually do the editing.
  3. Sculpting Columbia River

You know, Jeroni, if you keep making such beautiful areas I'm going to have to keep coming back. And that region shot is amazing! Once the 'straight edges' are blended in to their surrounding tiles, it will probably be the most realistic looking region (that's not based on a real city) that I've ever seen on SC4. GREAT JOB! As for the mosaic, ... ... ... it's too tough for me to decide. Either one would be great, I think. Keep it up!
  4. Mapp Squad Tokyo

I checked it for a fourth time and it should work. When you download the map, is it 2241 x 1473 pixels? Is the config.bmp file 35 x 23? If not, something is going wrong while downloading. I PMed you.
  5. MAPP SQUAD Sinclair

    Very nice!
  6. Official Mapping Community Requests

Date: 5/21/2005 9:01:50 AM Author: Prpl26 I would like to second the request for a small map (I also have a slow computer!) with plenty of islands. Small maps with small cities are hard to find, and I stink at making maps myself! Thanks!!quote> MrVegetable already made that map!
  7. Official Mapping Community Requests

Date: 5/21/2005 12:19:26 AM Author: steveg So, still no takers for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, even with a second asking? quote> Ay ay ay! I can't do everything at once! I'll get to it eventually. If you've made a request in this thread, I will try to get to it as soon as possible.
  8. NationStates.net - Simtropolis Region

The Cloudlands of Cumulo Nimbusland and the Penguinlands of Antarcticate would like to join the Simtropolis Region, however, the region in which the two countries are currently located (There are Rock Here) is where they will stay. This is because it was created and is populated with people I know in real life.

Wow! Thanks for that, people! You guys make me so happy. But, I couldn't have gotten anywhere without all you guys! Thanks for your support, and thanks for all your hard work! EDIT: Just an aside... I think you guys may have just snapped me out of my RLS! Woohoo! Back to work on the maps for me!
  11. Mapp Squad New York City

  13. Trying to render a region, but nothing happens.

Yep, it's satellite DEM data that can show elevation, not just satellite data.

Thanks for all the hard work, I promise to be patient! quote> Actually, Kansas City is already done! It's part of the Map Squad Request Pack, US Edition .
  17. Yellowstone about to blow?

Date: 5/10/2005 2:43:42 PM Author: MallowTheCloud Yes, there are two reasons why Yellowstone got such a high rating, and neither are because an eruption is imminent: 1) The one mentioned in the article--there are smaller hazards that pose a risk to the great numbers of tourists who visit each year. For example, large hydrothermal (i.e. geysers, hot springs, etc) events, gas leaks, etc. Also, there's a slight risk that a Mt. St. Helens sized volcanic eruption could happen within the caldera in our lifetimes. 2) The ever so slight possibility that there would be a supereruption. Though this risk is almost non-existant, the consequences would be catastrophic. It's a lot like saying 'what if a meteor struck?'. Though it's not likely to happen in our lifetime, the result would be so destructive that we should think about preparations and better ways to predict such an event.quote> Just thought I'd reiterate my point by quoting myself.
  18. Official Mapping Community Requests

Date: 5/14/2005 7:51:35 PM Author: Pepster i have been experiencing issues when i try to generate some maps (Boston and Ottawa), the jpg image isn't recognized propertly, and don't respond when i select the image which should create the map, this is very disapointing as the 2 maps i liked more, are unable to be recreated in my pc, what can i do?, any one else experienced such issue?quote> Yep, as leejj said. However, next time please post questions like these in a different thread. As for the requests... well... I don't like admitting this, but... I have had Real Life Syndrome recently. This is why I haven't been doing much here. I think I'm still recovering, so please be a bit patient.
  19. MAPP SQUAD Patience County

    Nice map!
  20. Signature size

Date: 5/14/2005 12:11:15 AM Author: greyveil Mallow, well the fact that you have 2 pictures is a violation, the rules state 1 and only one image filequote> Thanks for the info. It's been edited, any better?
  21. Signature size

Hmm, is there anything useless in my signature? (Just out of curiosity) EDIT: Right now I'm changing it a bit to make it a bit more streamlined.
  22. Date: 5/11/2005 8:53:21 PM Author: MiniMark Since the file size it too big and yet i cant upload my tiff file as its not supported, I figured that this will be the fastest and easiest way! I will give you the website that I bookmarked for this map. http://edcw2ks23.cr.usgs.gov/Website/distreq/RequestSummary.jsp?AL=40.52325698770727,40.37660362978112,-79.79588041556073,-80.05899379301644&PR=0&PL=NED02HZ,ND302HZ quote> Thanks, I'll make you a tutorial by sometime tomorrow!
  23. Lancaster PA USA v1

    Once again, great map!
  24. Greyscale terrain: Trouble with rivers

Bah, I've always hated that problem. SC4 always tries to do that. If the river is barely too small, it will give you strips of land at the border. If it is barely big enough, it will give you ponds at the border. It's just the way SC4 imports regions. When the rivers are wide enough, this problem is finally fixed. But, they have to be much wider than the river shown in your image. The only solution that I know of is to hand terraform after you've imported the region. In other words, you have to go to every problem spot along the borders, and carefully terraform the river so that it flows smoothly with the rest of the terrain. Sorry I can't give you any better advice; if anyone has any let us both in on the secret.
  25. MallowTheClouds Maps

Date: 5/11/2005 7:17:01 AM Author: RadioheadFan I believe that the mod changes sea level from 83 to 23, but Mallow would know for sure. RHFquote> That's exactly right (or at least what I've found from experimentation). I say 30 for lowest land and 20 for water because if you put the lowest land at 24, SimCity will smooth the edges so the water is way bigger than it should be. And, I put the water at 20 to make it deep enough for ports.
