With the cost of highways being high in the begining of the game when money is a bit short, it would probably be better to plan where they will goto and from, so you have an idea where not to build, i use them to circle the outside of the city and go to other cities in other regions. With the avenues mainly use these to go from the highways straight into the middle of the city centre where all the commercial is. Or major residential routes into the city. Avenues are used within the city area or just as single roads away from the city. I usually tend to start of the low resdential parts of the city with streets, than the medium and high resdiantial buildings use roads and for high commerical use the avenues as they require traffic to grow. With the railways same again really have a few train stations within the commercial area than fanning out to the residential areas of your city with stations within these areas so the sims can get to work and back. The main thing is though is what will be the usage of the routes for example if you have a lot of high rise buildings in one area of the city going to high rise commercial as you can probably tell there will be alot more traffic so the transportation sytem will need to cope traffic density.

I had the same problem a while back but what i did was to zoom into the city as near as you can and than zoom out till i got to the zoom level where i usually play the game from and the buildings re rendered themselves and looked alot better

All the industrial wants to do is find the nearest way out off the city, town etc, so if that means going by road instead of rail that is the means of transport they will use. too combat this just make connections using your rail to other maps and delete the ones for the roads

as seen from an outside point of view coming from a reasonable sized town in wales. many american cities are sprawled out over vast areas with empty vacant buildings all over the place. i don't know if anyone lives right in the middle of the city like we do in the uk. or do you have zones of commerical in the middle, industrial in the outskirts in one or more designated places and residential spread around like a patch work quilt. don`t get me wrong some of your architecture is superb but seeing large malls miles from any where reminds me of when the uk went through a phase of out of town shopping buildings which killed of the inner town which ended up with alot of boarded up and run down shops. but now the government and local councils are slowly addresing the problem and encouraging shops and people to move back into the middle of towns and cities.
